I think a more fair wage is necessary. 15 may be pushing it, but 7 definetly isn't a liveable job. Sure its great extra cash for that teen in highschool or whatever, but for someone who's life income is made by that, it won't work.

Alot of the graphs you're posting, where you compare productivity to wages, is completely ignoring the factor of technology on productivity. It should be obvious that as technology advances in a society, one unit of work will produce more units of productivity. Many of you posting the images are trying to argue that people aren't being compensated fairly when in fact they are - because they need to do LESS now than they ever had to before.
example for the mcD's employee: push a button and ignore everything until an alarm sells you the burger is ready. A lot different than it used to be in the 30s.
Another issue with this topic is that people are always bringing up the mcd's employee who needs to 'survive' on their wage when discussing this law.
This is the -minimum- wage that you are talking about. Meaning that it affects all jobs regardless of how simple or rudimentary the task is. If I hire someone to hold my ladder while I paint, I have to legally pay them the minimum wage. Literally any person with a working arm could do this job. Make sure to consider that when talking about changing that law, because it has a profound effect on many different things in the economy, not just your anecdotal skill-less, rude mcdonald cashier.
edit: reminder that this affects small companies as well, not just mcdonalds and wallmart. Cmon guys start thinking beyond stage 1 please.

Things will simply cost more, people will generally not get laid off because having lines that stretch around the block due to undermanning is worse for business than increasing the prizes of the products.
Usually people will pay the extra buck and bitch about it, so companies aren't that concerned about it. However, if you walk up to a store to buy something real quick, like a burger, and the line's way too long, you generally just do a 360 and walk away, not buying anything at all from that place.
People won't get laid off if the minimum wage increases, things will just cost more, and people who can afford it who makes above minimum wage will still buy it.No hate on the mod

What are you getting your masters in? I applaud you on the self discipline. However, my wifes best friend has a masters in Teaching. No one will hire her because she's "overqualified" She gets the $hit jobs.
I know the inns and outs of my industry. Once my dad and I buy our own electrical distribution I'll advance to a much higher tax bracket.I'd be happy making $150,000 a year with a highschool education. Some times street smarts are better than book smarts. Thats why I didnt go to college. School sucked, I graduated by the skin of my teeth, but I always knew how to make money.Chicago Crew

I think McDonalds and Walmart can do the 15/Dollar an hour thing, look at Costco. It can promote professionalism within the employees (something many low tier employees severely lack), promote employee retention saving the company TONS in hiring costs, promote brand trust, and overall help the lower to middle class.
Originally I was opposed to the whole idea of 15 dollars an hour, but it IS doable.

I love the delusional CEO's make too much comments. There's maybe 100,000 people that can run a multinational corporation successfully in the whole world. There are billions of burger flippers that have no intrinsic value and are easily replaceable. Companies are competing to get the best talent they can in the upper levels so they pay a lot of money. Burgers flippers are competing with other burger flippers and there is no real demand for them, so companies have no reason to pay you well, because a Mexican will do it cheaper than an American. If you can fool the world into believing a trillion dollar derivative scheme that is our first world economy, you deserve to be rich.

It doesn't matter. These idiots just asked to have their jobs taken from them.

If you're a host, a waiter, a cashier a low level burger flipper or work for tips. You should just keep your mouth shut and recognize that you're barely above the homeless man holding open doors to get a few quarters, and that you can easily be replaced. The Jerk store called, they're running out of you!

some of you are failing to see that where minimum wage may not be scaling correcting nor is middle class pay. You up the minimum wage but then leave the other 85% where they are. Now youv just moved the middle class lower in the poll. I make $40-50/hr doing what I do but I wont see that 60-70% increase in my pay will I? People that do jobs a 15 year old can do dont deserve anymore then what they are already getting.
If they get the $15/hr their almost getting paid what teachers get paid, within $2-4/hr...how fuking right does that seem?
everyone wants to work less for more money and poor fuk heads like these people are no different. My mother worked 3 jobs to support herself and me through school and into college. She knew her job wasnt worth high pay. She may have b*tched about the job being irritating but she NEVER thought she deserved more because she knew the jobs were not worth more.Last edited by Zerafian; 12-05-2014 at 11:35 AM.

I used be HR manager and in payroll. People don't realize that even if McDonald's decided to up their minimum wage to $15 an hour they would just cover their costs by cutting back hours significantly. You'd still end up making close to the same amount each paycheck just in less working hours. I guess that's ok if you want only 4 hour workdays and less the work but if you aren't working full time a lot of companies can cut your benefits

Negged. There's the difference between us, I am sure you're an idiot.
Nothing I wrote is in conflict with this, and you clearly think it is. Fluctuations in profits are expected; they are also expected to increase in the long term. Removing fiduciary duty = no expectation of profits to increase = no incentive to invest. Do I really need to explain all of economics to make you understand this point? A company cannot simply decide it's okay with making 1/2 the profit, if it can possibly avoid it. In fact it's illegal. This is why increased operational costs are always passed on to customers.

Just a small caveat to your post, there are good paying job fields that require little to no education beyond a HS diploma. I have a degree and a couple certifications, but the degree doesn't even really get looked at much/at all when applying for jobs in the IT/Networking fields. A $150 cert can be just as beneficial as a degree depending on the job.
