I'm guessing total cost to myself would be about $100 for watch (hopefully), $45 for caseback, $35 for dial, $40 for sail cloth band. So that's $220 cost to myself. If I wanted to go all-out and do the bezel insert too that would be another $50, so $270 cost. Not sure what I would even sell it for or what it would even be worth above the cost price. Thoughts?

I've seen the full mod go for ~$350.

One caveat, and this was one mentioned by Electabuzz when I had a similar idea; you would need to sell them "as is" without guarantee of any sort, considering that this would be your first mod. For that reason, you'd be lucky to fetch $300... and much less if you bend a hand, scratch a dial, leave a fingerprint on the crystal, etc.

Yeah honestly it might be too much work at this juncture for myself, because I also have to get all the tools to do it with. I will just make it a project for myself.

I wouldn't fukk it up though. If I set out to do it, I would do it right. Meaning I plan on getting some shib watches on eBay and practicing on them first. I would get real tools for it and not just dig around in my toolbox for a small flathead screwdriver, and I would wear a mask and latex gloves while handling it. But I feel like it is more of a self-project thing. I think I would be able to make more/easier money if I just saw the Seiko 5 on sale and bought a few of them and flipped on eBay for profit.

    Yep, that's it.

Wearing it daily now as my Omega is being serviced.

I have the premium case though. Günter, the owner of Steinhart was kind enough to accomodate that. It used to have the onion crown too and he swapped it for the mushroom, it's now the mushroom however as standard. He also let me choose from any strap I wanted.

Yeah doing it as a personal project would be a smarter idea, and will certainly be fulfilling.

Encasement and attaching hands is actually a very involved process to do correctly, any watch that has been encased by human hands in less than two hours is in my eyes of low quality. I'm not even formally trained but when I do encasement I examine the dial under 10x loupe and remove each and every dust particle, that alone can take 20 minutes, my prof can spend 4 hours taking care of dust on just one dial.

To get the job 'done' however is very simple., you can get a hands pressing tool, hand removers (these abominations are not how watchmakers actually remove hands btw, put a piece of waxpaper or a card in between the dial and the tool) screwback remover for ~20 from China on eBay.

If you have a bit of dexterity and take your time, use some rodico maybe to remove dust during the process and don't force anything, scratch anything or otherwise maim your project you will turn out a pretty good result at eye level - would I feel comfortable selling that? No. But in all likelyhood it will serve out a few years for you, maybe 6 or 7 if you did a great job.

Another issue with selling this piece now is we aren't sure if it's still waterproof, could you have turned the caseback too tight or let in some foreign chemical or sand that has compromised the seal? If you want to sell it I would ensure it works for at least a week and get it tested for water resistance at a local watchmaker. If you did all that and you did a clean job you could sell it for more with a water resistance certificate and good pictures, maybe $400.

What do you mean it will serve out only a few years if I modded it? Also, how do watchmakers remove hands instead of the tool (the tool I think looks like a pair of bent tweezers kind of, right?).

Fukk this is a lot more complicated and exact than I thought. If I were to modify it, I would want it to last for a lot time (as if it hadn't been modded), not as if I just got a cheap watch and said hurr durr lemme just slap on some stickers inside so it looks kewl!

Well as much as I respect Seiko, they aren't the nicest watches in the world and you're not going to get them serviced most likely, not talking about GS of course.. A stock Seiko will probably last 7 years with moderate use assuming there were no problems in manufacture. mechanical movements are very vulnerable to everything around them, if you slip and hit the balance spring with a screwdriver it might tell time somewhat accurately but the pinion could wear out unevenly and the watch would begin to deteriorate in the future. With something that is ticking and changing at such a high rate every day a small piece of dust or anything really can destroy the movement over time - which is why proper encasement is so important. We look at watches as inaccurate if they are off by 20 seconds a day, what's interesting is how precise we expect them to be for the money we pay, there are more than 80,000 seconds in a day and if it's off by 20 seconds it's garbage, keep in mind you are messing with a very precise beast.

Foodpron, that band is a cheap chinese croc band, came with a Parnis I bought a few years back.

Maybe in another life I could go to school for watch repair instead of what I'm doing now; this stuff is just too damn interesting. Thanks electabuzz.

So basically... is it even worth it to do the mod if I will just likely fukk it up and the watch won't last more than 5 years at best?

Do it, and just get the presto hands removal tool it will be fine.

And if you really find it interesting you're not too old at all, WOSTEP doesn't accept <23 years old. The education in watchmaking is very strange now though, Richemont basically owns WOSTEP so you have to work for them for X years after learning there, really sucks since WOSTEP is the only other decent alternative to where I go, and my school only takes 4 students. I'm not sure if I'm going off on a tangent here but if you do want to pursue it an apprenticeship is probably the best idea.

Sup brahs I found an Omega Seamaster aquaterra on craigslist. He was asking $1000 and i got him down to $850 already, i honestly think i could get it for $650 as it's been on craiglist for a while in the wrong section. Is there anyways to make sure this watch is 100% authentic without getting it checked out? I don't want the jewelry store asking how much he's selling it to me for ect. He said " I bought it new at bailey banks and biddle" has the original box and original receipt ect.

Going to put a strap like that on it if i get it^

    Go Tense...

Recently got into collecting Tense Wooden watches.. they use wood from all over the world and I believe it Myoto internal components (same as Citizen).

I get a ton of compliments on both my watches. Not enough posts yet to link directly in post... had to attach.

the box should come with a certificate of authenticity that has a serial number on it. the same serial number should be printed somewhere on the watch. you should be able to actually contact omega and ask if the serial number you see is real and if the description matches your purchase. if it doesnt (the certificate might be of another watch), then your watch (real or not) just lost a lot of its resale value.

even if the serial numbers match up, the only reliable way to confirm if it is real or counterfeit is to have an authorized Omega service center inspect it. They would probably have to open up the case and inspect the movement.

that being said, buying a watch off of craigslist or anywhere other than an authorized dealer is a really really dangerous idea.

    stay safe brah

same here, and while i really DO find it aesthetic, i rarely wear it because the rose gold is so difficult to match with my clothes.

I haven't posted in the watch crew threads since probably the first one was made, but I've remained an aficionado ever since. The other day at work I had a customer walk in wearing an orange monster and it brought a strong sense of nostalgia back as I had my own monster stolen back in April or something. Got on amazon that night and went to order another but got stuck (as usual) browsing all of my options. went through every single page of this thread checking out watches and seeing what everyone had to contribute. I went with the Pepsi Seiko, grabbed a red/navy NATO to go with it too. I may buy a monster as well in the next month just cause I still really miss it, but the "big daddy" I want to eventually get is that white-faced Hamilton Jazzmaster Chrono posted a few pages back. Holy blessed beauty...! Possibly purchase it after I graduate in May. I'll throw up some pics of my "collection" tomorrow or something.

    good to be back!

    this.

reps nowadays are so extremely accurate, especially to the naked untrained eye. many rep dealers can sell you a boxset with papers as well... but like said in ^ post, check the serial numbers... should match with certificate of auth. ask for some pictures of the # if possible, and the open caseback / movement.

more than likely, if it seems to good to be true...well. good luck

this, but then again under 1k for an AT is a steal! If there's still warranty on the watch, opening the caseback will void that. Look through a few RECENT tutorials on google on how to spot a fake AT, then with all that knowledge meet up or first ask for more pics (so that you can take your time analysing). The serial number should be on the back of one of the lugs. Google that and if you get no real results, it's already a good sign (most fake watches all have the same serial#). Then open caseback
