muscle mass and fat. If you want to get as big as possible as fast as possible w/out repercussions from gaining a little fat, then pizza is a godsend. Most people here take the "clean bulk" approach though. but a little dirty mixed won't kill anyone. It will add a lot calories, very quickly. (plus it tastes so damn good

I remember visiting my friend at college last summer...all we did in the day time was a lot of physical activities like full-court basketball, weight lifting, and catch football. And all we did in the night time was kill dozens of slices of pizza. I was there for about two weeks and I remember coming back 10 pounds bulkier...with not much gut added...so I highly recommend it ONLY if you plan to workout.

I suppose 2-3 slices per day is fine. It's only 750 calories.

Say, i'd bulk on ~3500 calories. I just make sure the other 2750 calories is rather clean. No big a deal.

Why not just clean bulk? Up your calories. Eat more healthy fats instead of all of the saturated fats and sodium in pizza. I just don't understand. People use bulking as an excuse to eat whatever they want. Might as well eat 10 Krispy Kremes to go along with it to get those calories up right? I know what I'm saying has been said 45845390494 times already, but I see more logic to this theory. I think you would see better results with a 100% clean diet, although pizza does tastes great. I guess just ask yourself how determined are you really? Not trying to be a jerk, just stating my opinion. Good luck with your bulk bro.

Not really. Assuming you get sufficient protein, EFA's and micronutrients, and enough carbs to maintain intensity in your workouts, and assuming your workouts aren't crappy, you WILL gain muscle on caloric surplus, even if it's from pizza.

Yeah, that's a lot of caveats. But there's nothing in there that says you can't do what you're trying to do on pizza (and maybe some multivitamins).

The thing is, you might gain MORE muscle by eating less pizza and more whole foods, since the micronutrient profile (both of known and unknown nutrients) is likely superior with the whole foods.

Fanatical clean eating isn't necessary to build muscle. But cleanish eating sure can help, especially if your goal is minimal fat gain while bulking. It's so much easier to control caloric intake when consuming less-processed foods.

Krispy Kremes aren't a great choice, because of trans-fatty acids. And of course they're fairly low in protein and micronutrients, so if that's your main diet your results probably won't be optimal.

At the same time, an occasional pizza or "non-clean" meal isn't going to kill your bulk or cause your BF% to explode. And assuming your nutrients are in place, things do basically come down to calories.

By the way, sodium is good for you, and saturated fat consumption is correlated with testosterone production. Go figure. The key, of course, is moderation -- not that easy to do with a diet of mainly pizza, to be sure

I say just don't go over board and make sure to keep your calories in check still. It's a lot easier to eat a couple slices of pizza than several cups of brown rice and a couple of chicken breasts. For me this is really true when bulking because I get full so easily. BBing.com is the home of the clean eating only crowd, so choose whatever you like better.

I would go with some green and red peppers instead of the broccoli, maybe a little onion, too.

That and how many people here compete? I bet a lot of people here don't let bodybuilding run their life, just to keep in shape and look pretty good. I'm sure a lot of people are like me and go out and drink on the weekends and eat bad food every once in a while. Who cares? You are only going to live this life once. I am going to have a good time and during the week, keep my diet in pretty good check and workout, b/c I enjoy it. And I am going to eat my pizza and drink my beer.

I agree with your point but I feel so damn guilty if I even eat a bite of junk (like pizza or brownies, etc). I'm actually obsessed with eating clean and I don't know if that's actually a good thing. I mean I daydream about junk foods and stuff! I just can't handle the guilt if I eat it. You're right though, we only live once, I'm only 24 and in pretty good shape. But oh, the guilt.

    Pizza, mmmmmmm.

So true. The purists here seem to think that greatness can only be achieved by eating the blandest and flavour-less foods possible.

When I studied psychology, one of the things we learned about was "superstitious behavior". It's pretty much what it sounds like: animals who are given rewards at random start to repeat actions that are coincidental with the rewards. In reality, what they did had nothing to do with the rewards. But they keep doing it anyway.

Bodybuilding seems to have a lot of that: people do several things at once, or change several behaviors at once (e.g. totally clean eating and a better workout) and wrongly connect irrelevant behaviors with the results or lack of results. Then they trumpet those things to others, who (eager to gain muscle and/or lose fat) start repeating the actions themselves.

The bottom line in getting bigger/stronger is this: lift heavy and eat lots. Everything else is details.

The problem that I constantly have to fight is - over a period of time small treats turn into big treats. Cheat snacks turn into cheat meals turn into cheat days, etc. My mind is designed to come up with reasons why it's ok. I have a horribly difficult time eating just one slice if the whole pie is sitting there. Same with chips, crackers, etc. I'm a carb/fat junkie and I gotta be careful what I start to eat. There may be none left for anyone else!

That is a different story, of course. It's like alcohol consumption: drinking in moderation won't substantially harm most people, but for some, a drink leads to 10, so all alcohol has to be avoided.

Of course, what matters ultimately is what you can sustain. Many people find "eating clean" an easier way to bulk without gaining excess fat because it allows them to control calories better, while at the same time managing their macronutrient and micronutrient intake. You have to do whatever works for you.

But that's a little different than the "true believer" message you hear pretty often regarding bodybuilding nutrition: anyone who doesn't maintain the purest of clean diets is doomed to a life of muscular atrophy and endless fat gain.
