23 books for <$75, I'm not going to complain, even if half are a bust.

I do buy most of the books I read though, so I'm going to start needing new shelves soon. I guess that's a new project I can take on during the quarantine.

    13. The So What Strategy by Davina Stanley - 5/5

A small booked packed with valuable insights and material that you can use right away. If you have a job that requires you to convince people on a regular basis, this is a must read.

    14. The Zahir by Paulo Coelho - 2/5

The second book of Paulo Coelho I've read. The Alchemist was the first one and I had a blast reading it. Unfortuntaly, he wasn't able to captive me like he did in The Alchemist. Not in the slightest. There were some amusing segments, but in general it was too abstract and vague for me.

15 Around The World In Eighty Days by Jules Verne (9/10)
16 The Runaway Jury by John Grisham (9/10)
17 Unlocked: A Journey From Prison To Proust by Louis Ferrante (6/10)**

** I heard Louis interviewed on an Art of Manliness podcast and then bought one of his books off eBay. There's no real "flow" to the book per se. It's primarily a bunch of stories organized before incarceration, during incarceration, and then after incarceration. He's an interesting guy who made the most of his time in prison. Most everyone ITT has a love of reading, but it took the loneliness of prison to prompt him to read his first book since school.

Anyone read the Dresden Files? First two books were okay, but I heard it gets a lot better in book three which I'm currently reading.
The series gets better as it goes along. Like a lot of authors, he improves his writing skill as time passes. That series has a great build up to book 12 "Changes" and that is great culmination. Book 13 dropped off in quality as he tried to go down a different road but it improved again as the story built. He did not publish anything for a few years book 15, but he has two new books coming out this year.

Here is a quote about how he wrote the first book just to piss off a teacher.

When I finally got tired of arguing with her and decided to write a novel as if I [were] some kind of formulaic, genre-writing drone, just to prove to her how awful it would be, I wrote the first book of the Dresden Files.

    26. County Lines by Jason Farrell

Written by the Sky News Home Editor, this is a solid book on gang/drug related crime in the UK with a focus on "County Lines" drug trafficking (I.E the practice of trafficking drugs into smaller towns/rural areas, away from the bigger cities). County lines have taken off in recent years due to saturation in the big city markets, and this has had profound effects at all levels. Farrell sheds light on this underground world via extensive research and a range of interviews with those involved, from dealers and mules to addicts who have had their place of residence "cuckooed" (forcibly turned into a traphouse).

    27. Thirteen (Eddie Flynn #4) by Steve Cavanagh:

Brilliant legal thriller centred on a high-profile murder trial and its unexpected connections. The story gets underway when the protagonist (Eddie Flynn) accepts an offer to represent the defendant (Robert Solomon), a Hollywood star accused of murdering his wife and chief of security. As the trial progresses, the atmsophere of the case reaches a level of intensity that no-one could have foreseen. This one is hard to review without spoiling so I'll leave it at that.

If you're into legal thrillers, I highly recommend this (you don't need to read the series in any particular order; this was my first of the bunch).

    28. Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

Set in the early 90s, this is a unique novel centred on the suicide of a teenager. Before taking her life, Hannah Baker compiled a set of casette tapes outlining the people/events she deemed culpable for her plight. She then arranged for the casettes to be circulated between the named & blamed thirteen (with the threat that a copy of the tapes would be released if the tapes didn't circulate as intended. One of her few friends helped to enforce her wishes). The novel starts off a couple of weeks after Hannah's death, when the narrator Clay Jensen (one of the thirteen) receives the tapes in the mail.

Interesting idea for sure, but despite it's macabre theme, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone over the age of 18-19

    29. Bruce Lee: A Life by Matthew Poly

Very comprehensive book on Bruce Lee's life, controversial death and legacy. Interesting, worthwhile read for me, and potentially gold for those who grew up in/around his era.

    13. "Survival of the Fittest" (1997) - Alex Delaware #11 - by Jonathan Kellerman (Audiobook) *Mystery*

I don't have a habit of reading at home because I watch movies whenever I stay home and have free time. Always I read kindle during commute and listen to audiobooks during jogging. So this WFH thing slow my reading down.

This sounds strange but the more time I stay at home, the less time I have for reading books.

So until this COVID-19 crisis is over, I only have 6 hours a week for listening audio books.

    Currently Reading:

"The Martian Chronicles" (1950) by Ray Bradbury (Audiobook) *Sci-fi*

"Swan Song" (1987) by Robert R. McCammon (Kindle) *Sci-fi*
I had to stop this one half way.

Really, really enjoyed this book. So much so, I stopped rotating between others. Good perspective on focusing on the prevention of problems vs. just reacting to the symptoms.

    Maybe like this?

    1. The Call of Cthulhu
    2. At the Mountains of Madness
    3. The Dunwich Horror (find a book including this short story)

I read "The Dunwich Horror" first, which was in a horror anthology unknowingly I bought. I had a friend crazy about the Cthulhu Mythos. Actually it was his craziness he showed when he was talking about Cthulhu inspired me LOL.

I finished the most recent Orphan X book (author Gregg Hurwitz), Into the Fire, last night. Holy hnggggg. I can't believe this book has less than 1000 reviews on Amazon.

    An easy 5/5 rating.

This book solidifies in my mind that this is my favorite thriller series. Better action, smarter writing, and better characterization than Jack Reacher, which I still love.

Super solid recommendation here. Only 10 pages through and it looks like a complete game-changer for organizing thoughts and communicating them to business stakeholders. Definitely will help me at work as well as writing papers for b-school.

Call of Cthulu, easily. It's his best known story for a reason. Remember that Lovecraft stories are about the IDEAS - his characterization and dialogue are hilariously wooden, since he didn't care about such things.

R is actually my preferred language for pure data analysis and stats (as well as Shiny Apps). Love it, RStudio, and Rmarkdown. But work a lot in Python due to my teammates and some of its more general strengths.

Tons I can recommend depending on what your interests are. Happy to answer any questions, but the best starting point book-wise imo is R for Data Science: https://r4ds.had.co.nz/

    So far this year:

The Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter - 3.75/5 - Good book enjoyed it. Just a bit monotonous regarding his training for battle.

Awaken the Giant Within - 3.75/5 - Good quick read. Nothing really you don't know just good for refocusing your mind.

Theft of Swords by Michael Sullivan- 4/5 - Loved it. The relationship between the two main characters is what makes this book.

Current - Rise of Empire by Michael Sullivan - Second book in the series - Awesome so far!

Got a massive list of books to go through this year.
Alright from this point I have covered:

Heir of Novron by Michael J. Sullivan 4.5/5 - somehow didn't see the end coming. Enjoyed it very much.

The Painted Man by Peter V. Brett - Book 1 - Good book but there are some kinda hardcore stuff ****/incest stuff. If you get past that you're all good.

The Desert Spear (Demon Cycle, #2) by Peter V. Brett

The Daylight War (Demon Cycle, #3) by Peter V. Brett

The Skull Throne (Demon Cycle, #4) by Peter V. Brett

The Core (The Demon Cycle, #5) by Peter V. Brett - Rate the series solid 3.8/5. It was just a fun journey to spend my time on.

Worm (Parahumans, #1) 4.6/5 - Holy s***! This was massive... Loved the concept of the story of superheros. It's got a similar concept to boku no hero acadamia where superpowers are weird and very varied. e.g. one dude can make knifes come out of surfaces, another can reshape bones, anothers body can mix chemicals. Not all superpowers are good some are crap. Story overall was really enjoyable, loads of battles. Not the typical good and bad guys. Be warned this book is 1.7mil words.

The Amulet of Samarkand (Bartimaeus, #1) 3.8/5 - Light reading compared to the last book. More of a YA book but still enjoyable. The banter from the demon is funny. This series is my chill out one before the next big one.

    13. K2: Life and Death on the Worlds Most Dangerous Mountain - Ed Viesturs. Viesturs is one of the worlds most accomplished high altitude mountaineers. He was the first American in history to summit all 14 of the worlds 8k+ meter peaks. In this book he details his own harrowing expedition up K2, and chronicles the history of the attempts on the mountain. At times it is very interesting, particularly his own experiences, and at times it’s a bit of a slog through dates, names, and locations that are hard to keep straight. Would definitely recommend to people interested in mountaineering, but his previous book “No Shortcuts to the Top” is definitely better. 7/10

    14. Living With a Seal - Jesse Itzler. Successful businessman Itzler convinces a former navy seal (David Goggins) to live with him and train him for a month. This is a fun, short, easy read, but doesn’t have a lot of substance. It’s mostly a log of “SEAL” making Itzler perform extreme workouts day after day. There’s quite a bit of humor, but in the end I didn’t feel “SEAL” was very fleshed out, and the sections where Itzler discusses (or brags about) his business successes were dreadfully boring. If you’re looking for inspiration or motivation, Goggins’ own book “Can’t Hurt Me” is a much better choice. 7/10

    15. Earthcore - Scott Sigler. Honestly, I had trouble finishing this one. It takes forever to get going, and when it finally does, it’s still pretty mediocre. None of the characters are particularly relatable or sympathetic, and the writing is just so-so. There are some cool action scenes, but that’s about all that is redeeming, imo. 4/10.

Currently reading: “Six of Crows” by Leigh Bardugo and “The Black Swan” by Nassim Nicholas Taleb.

    17. The Things they Carried - Tim O'Brien 5/10
    18. Six of Crows - Leigh Bardugo 8/10

Really happy to know you are alright, my old friend! If the corona has to get one of us it should be me, haha.

We could meet people around the world through social media for that the internet is great. However sometimes we lose contact with friends suddenly and never be able to see them again. I hope everyone who stopped posting are doing well but we'd never know.

It's been over six months since I got my new job myself so I know how hectic the life could be for you.

BB.com will never be the same without you. Stay safe, healthy, happy and strong with your family, my dear friend.

    13. Echo Burning by Lee Child

    Next.

    14. Without Fail by Lee Child

It's kind of funny to read these and see technology introduced and described in them. Echo Burning was the first one that started mentioning cell phones and Reacher also had to describe what computer modeling was to Jodie. Things we take for granted these days, as something normal. Onto Without Fail.
