max 2 for instant i would say , cause it's strong and you will likely have trouble sleeping / quality of sleep so the cycle of taking more to feel some energy in your day continues.
Aim to have your last coffee at least 6 hours before you sleep.
Better drop the coffee cups to 2-3 and add magnesium and melatonin before sleep , or b vitamins or multivitamin in your day.
Supp similar to caffeine , hmm maybe tea or theobromine from cocoa but the above suggestions are better.
Or get a stim - free preworkout for daily energy , there are some good ones out there , if you are willing to take this route , pm me.

Something that is like caffeine but isn’t like caffeine...................here’s what you do- put your left foot in, put your left foot out, put your left foot in and you shake it all about. You do the hokey pokey and you turn yourself around...that’s what it’s all about........

Could you be more specific?
If you want something that assists your workout (like caffeine) then stim-free ingredients like Citrulline will help.
If you want something that assists with mental clarity (like caffeine) then ashwagandha comes to mind
4 cups of coffee is fine..
Personal preference, but coffee messes my stomach up :/

Short answer, 4 cups is probably not a lot. If you were to poll western populations, I would guess it would not be far from the median.
I've posted elsewhere, but caffeine is a stimulant which works by inhibiting adenosine. Adenosine differs from ATP in that it exists freely in cells (rather than stored) and produces tons of different effects. Many speculate that it is a protective measure to minimize the metabolic requirements of cells, and thus acts as a protective agent (ie: heart attack; tissue ischemia). Adenosine binds to adenosine receptors on cells to produced a variety of effects:
1) Vasodilation (and all else constant, a fall in blood pressure) (except for renal vasculature, where it causes constriction),
2) inhibition of platelet aggregation
3) blocks cardiac conduction and reduces contractile force
4) constriction of your smaller airways
5) stimulation of nociceptive afferent neurons (causes pain, a protective measure)
6) general CNS transmitter inhibition (depressant).
Caffeine very basically causes the opposite of these 6 effects noted above. It is a stimulant, which to answer your question, is what you're looking for. I have not seen any stimulants on the market with a good double-blind, placebo trial with decent results. If you back off of the coffee for a while, you'll notice that the same dose will have better (more profound) effects, do to receptor regulation (the number of receptors/how easily stimulated the are).
