It is partly that now (stretched too thin), but - back then - most EU Member States did not have the necessary legislation to allow for certain types of monitoring, not just telecoms but shadowing people etc. It was considered unpalatable. What I was trying to show in an earlier post is that some EU Member States have faced Islamist terrorist attacks for quite some time now, and something ought to have been done about this a lot earlier.

There's an expression in the Netherlands about Belgians - I kept hearing it over and over again from Dutch colleagues of mine after the Brussels airport attack.

The thing that needs to be nipped in the bud as soon as possible is this idea that somehow the word "jihad" can be re-claimed and used in a so-called peaceful sense. I've only ever seen Linda Sarsour try to use it this way (in a talk where there were known persons implicated in terrorist activities in the room whom she praised) but luckily this was trashed in parts of the media. This is what I was getting at earlier about the ideology: look at the clips online of young Muslim university students who refuse to condemn Hamas. That isn't migration - that's another generation of young students that may be prone to the ideological radicalization that I've been harping on about.

I'm an ex-muslim, and I can tell you (and I've heard similar stories from ex-muslim and ex-christians) that arguments don't deconvert people, but they can inspire personal critical enquiry. (Noone is going to deconvert from a debate, or youtube video. But it can inspire the lengthy process of questioning beliefs.)

Here's a good a way to begin mitigating Islamic terrorist attacks: Forbidding all people of Middle-Eastern descent from living-in or entering the country. The ones currently within must be expelled as well; in need not matter if they are "doctors" or "lawyers" or children who have been born there. I would go one step further and remove all non-Caucasians in the process.

The suspect is not from the middle east. He's of Moroccan descent. Well, at least the one we currently know about.
