I don't know why but I feel more comfortable with the feet almost straight, maybe very slightly out and stance is slightly wider than shoulder width. Today I tried pointing toes outward and I felt a pain in my right hip.

I tore my mcl a while back and have since found squatting with my toes angled out will cause a dull pain right in that spot, but with my feet nearly straight its a pain free movement.

Your feet should be allowed to point in whichever direction they naturally want to point. If you purposely 'aim' your feet in some unnatural direction, you're placing a torque on your knees and/or hips that will cause them to track unnaturally for your particular body mechanics.
