I appreciate the answer brah. I've already taked to several recruiters that come give talks to my club. I'm fine chatting with them, I'm not awkward or anything. I'm just worried about my skillset, and the amount of time I have left. I have 2 years left in my program, and I want to complete at least 2 internships to make me feel secure about my job prospects after graduating.
You know what I'll probably just approach this career fair the way you suggested. I'm usually a stress-free and care-free person but after seeing some of my class mates already grabbing internships, I guess I got the itch too lol.
Thanks again.

Anybody prepping for career fairs? Fall might be the big one, but you'll find opportunity this month. I'll be out in Lubbock in a couple weeks, and UT in 3 days. We missed tamu's but will be there in the fall

You can't overdress. You'll see full suits in engineering fairs, however due to the conservative nature of the field, you get away with stuff. Wear a tie. Dress shoes. Dress pants or slacks. You don't have to have a jacket but it wouldn't hurt. A good resume that stands out is more important

I didn't have a suit with me either at any of the career fairs or job interviews I went to (I went to school 6 hours from my hometown and that's where a lot of my dress clothes/suits were). I just wore dress pants, dress shirt, tie, and dress shoes. I was wearing stuff that was very form fitting, though, so it looked good. I also wasn't self-conscious about it, so doubt they even cared.
I can say though I was significantly in the minority. I could maybe count on one hand the amount of people who did NOT have suits on. Like I said, if you are comfortable in your own skin and don't notice it, you'll be fine. If you have one, of course, wear it. If not, do the best you can. The #1 rule of dress is to wear something that looks good (meaning no parachute shirts, pants 2x too big, etc). Wear clean, form-fitting stuff and that is the most important thing. #2 would be to wear what makes you comfortable in your own skin. If you are confident, it will radiate and nobody will GAF.
Good luck, brah. Hope it goes well!

What are the things that "stand out" when you interview?
Thanks man
Congrats bro, I'm actually in the same boat myself with internships, just got an email last night offering me a position. Another company I interviewed with a couple weeks ago said that once I was done interviewing to let them know if I wanted to work with them, but they didnt formally offer me a position yet. Both of these internships are offered through a program where the government actually pays our stipend for an 8 week period. I'm also on another company's radar as well, through a connection, that isn't part of this program. I would accept in a heart beat but I haven't even been called for an interview yet (99% sure I will eventually tho). They are a very reputable aerospace company. And on top of all that I still have my schools career fair to go to.
I'm not sure what to do lol. Company 1 (wants me to let them know if I chose them before offering me a job strangely), has a project I'd really like to work on, company 2 (offered me a position) has a super great atmosphere but they want me to help them make an app (blah). Company 3 hasn't even called me yet but they would pay the most and look the best on a resume. And then who knows what will happen at my career fair.
Should I just accept every position I get and then chose closer to summer? I don't want to burn any bridges.Last edited by DrinkingBull; 02-03-2016 at 04:57 PM.

I have 2 separate interviews, One is with ComEd (Unit of Exelon). Power Distribution/Transmission testing group. It actually relates 100% to my previous experience at another utility company and is the position I want. The other position is at Exelon performing engineering tasks under supervision in support of the nuclear power plant. That's the most they have told me. I passed the Tech test and was recommended. I have the personality based interview on Feb 17th then I believe there is 1 more after that.
General Dynamics offered me a contract position at 30/hr with no benefits or relocation assistance (4+ hours away) in Sterling Michigan. I was working with a recruiter, I declined the position and they came back with 34/hr with only 25/hr taxed. They did mention that there would be massive layoffs after 1 year. General Dynamics received 3 contracts from the Army and when those contracts were up people were going to be laid off. I declined the offer and the recruiter told me that they already told general dynamics that I accepted the position. They gave me 5 hours to decide and I declined the position.
I interviewed for a SoCore energy in Chicago. I really wanted that job, but they offered a lot less money 25/hr contract to employ. There was 2 of us that interviewed and the next day I got a text from the recruiter saying they were looking for someone that already passed the EIT test and had a more technical background. They knew this long before the interview so I feel like they're were other reasons. The interview went well IMO, but I think I may have just not fit in. Very progressive company, guys with man buns and long hair in flip flops walking around in the office while I was wearing a suit.
I still have interviews with Prime Systems Inc, Ciorba consulting engineers and Invenergy.EE

Bolded is enraging. I would not even bother ever answering those ****er's calls ever again. So annoying, lol. That's why I don't really care to bother with 90% of recruiters. They are just out for themselves and you are their payday. So many of them are unprofessional too or they simply don't know wtf they are talking about. Like I'm an EE who has taken 1/3 of ME and have SolidWorks experience. I'll get calls from recruiters for ****ing mechanical drafting positions. I'm like wtf, lmao? Do you even know what you're doing? They just see oh herp derp, it says they need SW and this guy has SW, must be a great fit! So yeah, recruiters can be great, but IME, they are more times not worth it than they are worth it.
Yeah, contract-to-hire should be a last resort and like if it's either a position you would really want or in a location you would really want. I had a C2H offer for Orange County that I considered taking, but the fact of no benefits + not enough pay for the area + no guarantee of a job and I just couldn't do it.
Good luck, brah. Sounds like you aren't having any difficulties finding a job, so hopefully you can be picky and get what you want!

alright bro's so this is what I told them:
VATO,
I greatly appreciate the offer. I am still very interested in working with you and the rest of the team this summer. I do, however, still have a couple interviews left and I would like the extend them the courtesy of going and seeing what they are about before I make my final decision. I hope this is alright with everyone.

Layoffs going down tomorrow (25%)
My interview next Friday can't get here soon enough
Should I just accept every position I get and then chose closer to summer? I don't want to burn any bridges.
I'll share with you my experience (I am only two years out of school and therefore may not have the wisdom or perspective of other people in this thread). If I am being 100% honest with you, I do regret not burning a bridge. At the time I figured I'd be able to transition somewhat easily to a dream company/location after a year or so, but that isn't going to happen anymore. IMO sometimes you have to make sure you take the best job and burn a bridge because you never know if that opportunity will come back around. Of course hindsight is 20/20 and maybe if I would've gone the other way I would've regretted burning the bridge, who knows.Last edited by TXDStone; 02-04-2016 at 04:34 PM.

What's the stress for? Internships should be very easy to find, there's postings literally everywhere. Use your career fair, indeed, engineerjobs, etc.
The JobAware app is pretty sweet, it conglomerates job postings from different sites like Indeed etc. and lumps them by metro area, so if you're looking at a certain city it will show you all the jobs matching your description in that area.

I know they're not hard to find. The problem is the a lot of them seem out of reach for me. I met a bunch of my classmates with really competitive resumes, while mine doesn't have much on it. It's partly because I'm a transfer student from a Community College and I didn't get much opportunity to get some club projects or anything.
I know, much of it sounds self-defeating. But I'm still gonna visit my career fair with the expectation that I won't get anything, and hope for the best.*Reps everyone who negs crew*

FTW,
1 day (LITERALLY 1 DAY) AFTER CAREER FAIR, I get a call from the company recruiter asking me for a phone interview and then asking me to send her my schedule to see when would be the best time for me to come in and have an interview.
FTW 2 job offers. and 2 interviews. ! interview tomorrow and one next week.

When I was a sophomore, I got my first internship beating out juniors with 4.0s, previous internship experience, student organization president, etc.
Wouldn't worry about what your classmates have on their resume, if you're genuinely passionate about your work it will show, and you'll have great interviews.
You already have it correct IMO to just go and hope for the best, though. I'd try to get your resume to as many people and apply to as many positions as possible, you'll have lots of opportunities

Pretty motivating to hear that man. I'm just worried about being "stupid" during the internship. I'm super eager to learn how engineers actually work, but I'm not "passionate" about a certain aspect of engineering yet. I'm not even sure what type of engineer, or what industry I'd enter when I graduate. All I know is that I want to help design things that better our future. Transportation, energy, anything that brings about a change for the better.
I also realize that internships are literally the first line of experience we get as engineers, so I'm having weird contradictory thoughts lol. But, I am currently spamming out resumes online. Hoping for the best here.
I appreciate the advice dude. It's pretty encouraging.
How'd you get your foot in the door? Like getting the interviews? I'm assuming as a sophomore you didn't have much to brag about then.*Reps everyone who negs crew*

Engineer brahs, I am in my second semester of uni right now. My math is low, not from aptitude but by the time registration came around all the math classes were pretty much full that fit my schedule. I have been looking at my future and engineering seems to be a logic choice for me, but I would prefer to graduate within 4.5 years from the start. Is it viable to still believe I can graduate in less than five years if I take calc 1 during my fourth semester of uni?
