i dont agree with it. if a guy is 250 pounds and 5%bf and never competed, he is still a bodybuilder.

Being a "bodybuilder" seems to be a badge of honour, or status symbol for some people.
It's just a definition of an action. If you're building up your body, you're bodybuilding.

Two ways to look at it.
1: You 'bodybuild'--youworkout with weights to increase the size of your muscles. You're a bodybuilder.
2: Your life needs to revolve around it. I think this is why calling the average fit dude a bodybuilder feels kinda off. Like you wouldn't speak of someone as a 'runner' if he didn't do it at a very serious, competitive levelMy recommended reading

There is a distinct difference between competitive bodybuilders and people who just happen to train for fitness or looks. And also, no anyone that isn't a competitive bodybuilder is 5% BF and not competing. Most are around 8-12%.
The mindset is much different. I wouldn't consider a non-competitive bodybuilder a ''bodybuilder'', I know it doesn't make sense grammatically but you get the point.
Also..being a ''bodybuilder'' is a lifestyle, thus meaning someone who works out with no ambition doesn't really make him a bodybuilder...anyone can do a clean bulk without ever having to diet down to low BF%.

Well, if we're splitting hairs I'm gonna say no. There's a difference between a body builder and a bodybuilder.
A body builder could be a football player trying to add some mass, or someone trying to get in better shape for the summer.
A bodybuilder is someone who commits to a complete lifestyle change for the purpose of sculpting and balancing his/her body specifically for visual appeal, focusing on details of the physique rather than just overall fitness.

Wow, people really care about this.
Look, let me break it down for you. Just because you compete or are planning to compete and in your mind you're "hardcore", you don't need to take anything away from others by only classing yourself and others doing the exact same thing as "bodybuilders".
It's meaningless. It's simply a definition of something people do with their body.Novice Athletic Tall winner and Overall Athletic winner

This is hypocritical.
99.99999% of every man in a gym/these forums who call themselves "bodybuilders", never have nor plan to ever take the time out of their life to create a posing routine & practice it for hours on end, or to put themselves through the mentally obliterating stress & pain of adhering to strict dieting for months straight, dehydrate their body's cells to the point of sever cramps loss of eyesight, kidney malfunction, ect, painting their body ridiculous colors in hope to show that one extra muscle fiber under unpredictable lights, standing in front on hundred of strangers only to be judged on EVERY weakness you have along with possibly having that fact of the men standing next to you somehow be "better" than you. ect ect ect.
There are so many things that make an actual bodybuilder a bodybuilder, that it's insulting and as you said "takes away from" their effort that the average gym rat somehow has the right to say he is equal in title/status.
