Grandpapa was a tail gunner aboard a B-24 from like 42-44 before his plane failed mid air and somehow survived the crash. Was later picked up by friendly submarine after floating in the water for about a day on a raft with 4 other guys.
Tens of millions of people participated in WW2, everyone on misc should have a story

World War 1, but cool nonetheless:
Great grandfather on Mum's side was there when the Red Baron was shot down (contention on who shot the bullet) but he managed to grab the medical kit from the Red Baron's aircraft before officials surrounded the plane. It's still somewhere in my family, as well as all his diaries from war, interdasting stuff.

my grandpa was in the army air corps, saw the pics he took when the japanese bombed pearl harbor, (he was there) also some pics of amelia airheart(sp?) when she stopped by...got shot in 2 or 3 times while he was at guadal canal and survived, then apparently on his boatride home a kamakazee smashed the back end of his ship, not to far from his bunk but luckily he was working in the front of the ship... alot of crazy chit apparently.

92 year old grandfather was a Army WWII vet, ended up on mainland Japan as the war came to a close... had many battles on his way over there. He has a 8mm handgun and a badass japenese sword from when they were confescating all the Japanese weapons on the mainland, the sword has been appraised at over 30k... but could easily be worth more. my parents are researching it now and plan on providing him the swords history on Xmas day. There is some writing on it where the sword seperates from the handle (hilt) that talks about who it was for (some govenor) and what prefect of Japan... it has an ivory and brass handle all hand carved.. it is awesome. i have pics, someone tell me how to embed and I will upload them.
Anyhow, Grandpa is a bad ass man, don't take now crap and has been beating back the grim reaper for several years. I love that man, would be satified if i grow up to be half the man he is. Self made millionaire too.

Made me relook into everything he died when I was 5 but I have his medals and awards.
Korea-In 8 months as the "Mayor of Sabre Jet City," he flew 86 combat missions and destroyed 10 MiG-15s to become the first double jet ace wing commander, damaged 9 others, and was credited with 3 probables.
WWII-The following March, with only 50 minutes training in the P-47 Thunderbolt, Johnson's group began combat operations from southern England in preparation for the Normandy Invasion. On D-Day plus 6, his group moved to airstrip A-5 in Normandy. He assumed command of the 48th Fighter Bomb Group, flying from Belgium in October 1944, and by war's end had accumulated 92 fighter missions and 1 victory against an Fw-190.
Ya you be mirin. Thought about going into airforce as a combat pilot when I was a kid but eyesight wasn't good enough.
Also the plane he used the most.Last edited by Forest239; 12-18-2012 at 02:47 PM.
