Women are obsessed with getting rid of 'tummy fat' because they don't like looking pregnant when they're not/they are very self-conscious of tummy 'flab' even if it's not there? They think a flat stomach is the ideal. Some reasons I guess. They think it will help but they need to do other exercise than abs and cardio haha. I don't really understand but it seems we are influenced by female gyms to just do abs and cardio when there's more to it. The may not realise that doing weights and more intense stuff will be very beneficial, because they're worried about getting bulky when it's highly unlikely that they will get bulky. We've always been taught to be gentle, haven't we haha? It's an old wives tale that women should not lift heavy weights but now that it's the 21st century we can surely start getting over that and get into good lifting and so on. Sorry LP.

^ she pretty much nailed it
On my favorite workout day I usually do 45 minutes to an hour of cardio then head downstairs and do the ab machines before stretching a few minutes and calling it a night. It leaves me with a feeling that my midsection is tight and toned. I think it's a mental thing. I still do all my other body parts! It just doesn't feel as accomplishing though.

for the same reason Broskis do 40 mins of dat der abs on a stabilzer ball...they don't know anything about proper exercise or lifting.
I see the same fatties male and female using up the ab machines EVERY time I'm in the gym. Then I max out the machine to build core strength and they give a wtf look...cuz they don't know how to lift. /answered./Getting fat till Big 3 = 1000

As often as we hear this, abs are really made in the kitchen. Especially if you're an "apple" shape like I am, you won't see your abs unless you keep your diet clean.
Reasons why we see woman at the gym doing only cardio and abs is because for centuries we were taught NOT to lift weights and that skinny was the "in" thing. Woman automatically assume that they will look like Arnold if they lift heavy. I had the same problem when I first started as well but got it through my head that it wasn't real. When I tell my friends that I lift they think I'm crazy. Or when they see that jar of protein powder in the backseat of my car, they think that I should tune it down a bit. Protein is just as essential for woman as it is for guys. And so is lifting.

As everyone else already said, women think if they lift, they are going to get bulky and look like a man. But it's a no brainer that a tight flat stomach is sexy so they just focus on doing cardio and abs. Or legs. I swear every woman in my gym manipulates the inner/outer thigh machines - can't get near them. Ever. I see some doing curls with 5 pounders. But that's the extent of it. There's maybe 3 or 4 girls that work out in the weight room.
There is one girl who comes to my abs class stinking up the room with her perfume and that is the only time I ever see her. Except when she comes in and does maybe 15 mins of cardio. I feel like telling her to save us the troubleand not bother because she isn't going to get the 6 pack she wants just doing that.Danielle xoxo

I just moved from L.A. to Ohio this year and have to say there are so many more women that actually lift weights here. In L.A. it was 90% cardio bunnies....... from what I've seen so far here Cleveland there are a lot of really lean and musclular women in the gym. I like it

My guess is they think they will lose their thunder thighs that way, but dont realize there's way better ways of training legs. I will use those machines once in a while to round out my workout and just do some accessory work but I'll only do it if they gym is somewhat empty. Otherwise it just isn't worth the hassle. The best thing I ever did was ditch those machines from my usual leg workout.
That is refreshing to hear - I'd have thought it would be the other way around.Danielle xoxo

There's a guy at my gym who does the morning aerobics class. Then he and a couple of the women get on the elliptical for 30 mins after that. Once in a blue moon, I will see him do some of the weight machines. The only saving grace about the fact he is doing step aerobics is that he will bring in 20 pounders to do all the weight stuff they do in there, as opposed to using the Barbie weights.
He has made a point several times to tell me he wants advice from me because I'm in great shape and he wants to know how I do it. I told him the first thing he needs to do is to step out of the step aerobics class, stop doing so much cardio, and start lifting. His response was a huff and to roll his eyes at me. I feel like asking him why he even bothered to ask if he doesn't want to hear the answer. Some people will never understand, or never want to understand.Danielle xoxo

Personally I prefer if they continue to work in the abs section or on the cardio equipment. It is very annoying to have to wait for a piece of equipment when whatever they are doing on that equipment is less effective than if they just stayed on the cardio equipment. Fortunately, they don't have the patience on the equipment to do anything more than one set (which is surprising considering they will chug away for hours on those elliptical machines – I get bored after 5 minutes).
As for why they do it…just misinformation about bulking and a percentage of guys that aren’t interested in women that have any muscle definition (my ex was one…didn’t consider a six pack on a woman sexy…kept wondering why I wanted to lift weights…any time I asked him to help me out starting a weight lifting program, he would have me do drop sets to the point where I couldn’t move my arms for a week).
And the only use I have for the abductor/adductor machine is jacking up the weight and holding in the closed position (adductor) for a 1 minute straight (goal of 5 minutes), in an effort to create a stronger guard and body triangle.
During the times I go, there are only 4 women at my gym that actively work in the weight section.

I wish this were the case for me. I kill my lower body, I feel like my progress is SO slow. I've skipped countless upper body days, and my progress there is still light years ahead of my legs =/ I'm working on it though.
As for the OP, I rarely do abs, I'm trying to add them in more, and cardio is pretty much a never for me. I know I need it, but I feel like I'm dying when I do cardio. I'd much rather suffer through the pain of lifting heavy than the pain of doing cardio.

Woman think that lifting weights will make them look like men. In fact this is definitely not what happens. They do not produce anywhere close the the amount of testosterone as men do.
I’ve been working out for many years and noticed that more and more women started working out. But one thing that bothered me about this was actually watching them work out. Many come to the gym clueless and are afraid to ask a more knowledgeable person how to do something or what they should work on. Next time you head to the gym, you at least won’t make these 5 mistakes again.
Only doing cardio
- If you want to find 95% of the women at any gym, look in the cardio section. Of course cardio is good for you, but it’s not all that you should do. Many women will go to the gymand spend countless hours on the treadmill, bike, and elliptical. If you are there only to burn calories, they maybe this can work but if you want to actually sculpt your body, you need to do so much more. A good workout program should consist of cardio and strength training, don’t limit yourself to cardio alone. Losing the extra weight isn’t going to give you nice round shoulders, abs, toned arms, legs, and that butt you want. All those things are muscles, so you must build them in order to have that nice sexy toned look you want. Next time you go to the gym try lifting some weights or at least using some of the machines. Try spending about 30 minutes doing moderate- high intensity cardio, plus 30 minutes of strength training

For the same reason you see so many guys, particularly newbies, that also focus mainly on ab exercises. The women think working abs only is the way to a flat stomach that will make them look better in jeans and swimsuits and the guys think the key to getting a 6 pack is non-stop crunches. Ever notice on certain websites how these popups and sidebar advertisements on how to gain a 6pack or flat belly in 6 weeks by doing specific exercises? People believe that its exercises targeted to just the ab area that will make them get a flat belly and do not realize the key is losing body fat through total body exercise, lowering calories and avoiding certain foods.
