the core of organized religion is arguably its ability to fill gaps in human knowledge. back in the day, god was enormous. he controlled everything. back in the day we couldnt explain much. disease, natural disasters, cosmology, science, mathematics, physics, chemistry etc were undeveloped. god explained what we didnt know.
then the renaissance happened, and we learned things. we could explain things without god. bubonic plague? god? nope that ****s bacteria yo. brb penicillin oh mah gawd im playin gawd with this motha****in needle!
then isaac newton, who is widely considered to be the greatest mind ever in human history by modern academia (serious) charted the orbits of the planets around the sun using mathematics that were WAY THE FUK BEYOND HIS TIME. but he couldnt explain certain anomalies in his calculations. so what does this ******* do? GIVES UP AND SAYS ITS GOD. wtf isaac?? what a piece of ****. the greatest mind in history couldnt explain something, so he thought it must be god. he couldve continued to look for answers, and his contributions could have been unbelievable, but instead he sat on his ass happy to not know the answer.
today of course we can explain newton's anomalies and much more, without god. scientists KNOW, RIGHT NOW that the big bang really happened and that it MUST have come from nothing (Lawrence Krauss - a universe from nothing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ImvlS8PLIo).
and thats really the danger of religion. it encourages ignorance and discourages knowledge, proof, evidence, effort, novelty, intelligence, innovation, progress, advancement, etc. this is what happened to newton. rather then encourage people to grow and learn, it stunts knowledge and creativity by purporting to know everything, while clearly knowing nothing.
religion helps people - truth. but at what cost? at the cost of their ability to reason rationally? to think objectively? to brainwash people into thinking theres nothing left to learn? not worth it.
its only a matter of time before theres nothing left for god to explain.

it isnt just to fill gaps in knowledge though, its to fill gaps in emptiness and take the place of unhealthy obsessions too-drugs, gambling, sex...even money
the truth is, people follow religion for more reasons than just "theyre dumb" as you misc theology experts would have us all believeOfficial Misc. Linebacker

I think religion will simply be condensed into a very small group of fanatics. Probably a single race branched out from others because of all the interbreeding. They might be mutated slightly from living underground, and will kidnap people in their homes at night to sacrifice to zombie Jesus.

I agree OP. Religion is a fairytale for children. As the human race evolves we will begin to understand ourselves much better and the need for God will dwindle. Religion is a tool for understanding reality. Unfortunately this tool is misunderstood and misused. In reality, it is not you living in Gods world, it is God living in your world.

a god of some form has been around since the beginning of man. You think he is just gonna go away? Any scientific advances that lead us to answers will just lead us to a thousand more unanswered questions. You're wrong, the idea of god is not going anywhere any time soon
also lol at how 86% of the world is religious yet misc is atheist so therefor "world will soon drop religion"

Its pretty much like that over here. Churches are mostly like ancient ruins and vestiges of a time gone by. They mostly function for the scattered and few who lack the spine and intellectual fortitude to face reality to form enclaves on sunday night, who promptly disperse for the remainder of the week until their next dose of phantasm in 7 days to help cope with their mortality

In the year 2525
If man is still alive
If woman can survive
They may find
In the year 3535
Ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lies
Everything you think, do, and say
Is in the pill you took today
In the year 4545
Ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes
You won't find a thing to chew
Nobody's gonna look at you
In the year 5555
Your arms are hanging limp at your sides
Your legs got nothing to do
Some machine is doing that for you
In the year 6565
Ain't gonna need no husband, won't need no wife
You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too
From the bottom of a long glass tube' Whoooa
In the year 7510
If God's a-comin' he ought to make it by then
Maybe he'll look around himself and say
Guess it's time for the Judgement day
In the year 8510
God is gonna shake his mighty head then
He'll either say I'm pleased where man has been
Or tear it down and start again
In the year 9595
I'm kinda wondering if man is gonna be alive
He's taken everything this old earth can give
And he ain't put back nothing
Now it's been 10,000 years
Man has cried a billion tears
For what he never knew
Now man's reign is through
But through eternal night
The twinkling of starlight
So very far away
Maybe it's only yesterday
In the year 2525
If man is still alive
If woman can survive
They may thrive
In the year 3535
Ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lies
Everything you think, do or say
Is in the pill you took today ....☰☰☰☰☰☰☰☰LOOK UP☰☰☰☰☰☰☰☰☰☰☰☰☰✈

What you don't understand is that even without religion violence and persecution would occur. We fight wars because of personal choices, not because "god told us to", and if you believe the latter then you are accepting that there is in fact a god. The religion is just the means for the wars to be fought. You think if no one believed in a god or religion that we would all be completely joyous and peaceful?

Religion will never completely die out. Virtue will be ever on the decrease, as vice will run rampant. In times of sorrow, people will be ready to follow someone who is good in heart, and without a hint of selfishness. He will teach people how to live happily. That's how it has been in the past, and then it gets established as a religion.

religion has nothing to do with violence. that is a horrible argument that im tired of hearing about. especially christianity. the whole basis of the belief is peace and love. if anyone says the committed violence in the name of christianity then they arent christian and are probably going to do it anyway. i would think someone smart like you would figure that out by now. and i still dont understand how it is bad. just because you dont believe in it and agree with it personally doesnt mean its wrong and doesnt mean its a bad thing.
also, im not talking about violence and atheism. not even mentioning the amount of atheists that commit crimes (that i could easily use to claim that atheism is the root of violence), im simply talking about stubborn fanaticism. the majority of atheists go out of their way to tell theists they are wrong and dumb and dont even think about it. its borderline sociopathic how close minded some are to the effect that they see the stories being told and instead of thinking of the deep message that it is trying to portray to people, they get stuck on this "zombie jesus/why would god send me to hell if he loves me" thing.Last edited by correll28; 12-11-2011 at 07:59 PM.

Eventually science will understand God then the barrier will be shattered. If a force like God IS working (which yes I do believe it is, in a very different way than religions perceive) it has to be making sense. Religion puts this idea out there that he just has this POWER this POWER OF GOD this MAGIC, POWER IN THE BLOOD, like he can just warp and break all rules of existence like a cartoon superhero. That is nonsense, if it is happening, such as miracles that really do happen, then there is logic to it, it has to be making sense, we just don't understand it.
Everyone used to "know" that the world was flat. People really believed that, they knew it, duh the scientists tell us haha of course it is are you dumb? We just don't fully understand God and our existence yet.***-- Ron Paul 2012 --***
