Ive had pain in my shoulders (more severe in the left) when lifting for about 2 and a half years now. Im suspecting the problem is shoulder impingement syndrome for instability. Ive finally decided to get them checked out, Im just wondering what he will do to determine the problem.

He will perform an evaluation to locate the exact cause of the problem and it will more than likely be an MRI. If it is shoulder impingement syndrome, like you suggested, then the rotator cuff will be the problematic area.
Depending on the severity of the damage/injury he will either offer you an exercise rehabilitation program to strengthen and coordinate your rotator cuff or he may advise surgery.
