So i'm going on a trip to New York at the end of May with my gf. Neither of us has been there before so i want to make sure i make the most of it. Hotel and flights are already booked. i'm going to be staying on the upper east side and i'll be there 5 nights.
Now, i've done some research on what to do/things to see and have everything mostly planned out already. All the touristy stuff is already on my list, so i want local opinions on anything else i should check out. I'm open to pretty much anything and i'm looking for stuff that's off the beaten path that most people who don't live there wouldn't know about. food, attractions, bars, whatever.
thanks in advance brahs

Downtown lower east side you have Bleecker street, Kenny's Castaways, Holiday Cocktail Lounge, buncha clubs, music, live bands, restaurants, etc. Central Park is cool and free. Dojo's is cheap and cool, near NYU. Nobody really bothers you in NYC. Uptown (42nd street and above) is expensive. Check out the Bodies exhibit and maybe the Blue Man Group. Chill downtown, more bang for your buck and IMO more new york style. WXOU Radio, ACME bar and grill, ACME underground, Atomic Wings, so much to do/see downtown... But mostly drinking and bars. Just walk around down town and act social, but don't let anyone **** with you. I work on 18st, can show you the best view of NYC and the Empire State Bldg where I work if you PM me.

Also check out Chelsea Piers. Intrepid is on 45th st and 11 ave. But downtown is where it's at IMO. just walk about, and you will find cool places. SoHo has some cool art galleries, just browse and meander into shops that pique your interest. Karaoke clubs on avenue A and B too. Just don't get hustled / act like a tourist...

Thanks. Hey, romantic horse and buggy ride in Central Park during the day, at night head on out to the lower east side. walk about. Every block you will find a cool restaurant / bar / club that is cool, not too expensive. Tell the cabby "Bleecker and Thompson." get out and just walk around. You'll have a lot of fun.

My personal favorite AFFORDABLE eats:
Artichoke Pizza - Union Square
Joe's Shanghai (order the soup dumplings) - Chinatown (Mott Street)
Katz's Deli - Lower East Side (east houston)
Yama Sushi - Union Square
L&B's Spumoni Gardens Pizza - Brooklyn
Momofuku Noodles (order the fried chicken) - East Village
If you plan to take the subway, stick to the NQR and 123 trains for the majority of your manhattan travels.
If you venture outside of Manhattan..
Brooklyn - Coney Island, Williamsburg, Brooklyn Bowl/Brooklyn Brewery Tour
Bronx - Catch a Yankees game if they're in town. Don't go anywhere where the stadium isn't in sight.
Queens - Downtown Flushing, Astoria, LIC, Mets @ Shea Stadium
Staten Island - Not worth your time
Hoboken - Washington StreetLast edited by jnamer; 04-04-2013 at 10:26 PM.

3 must have food experiences on manhatten IMO
lombardis pizza- first pizzaria in the us and it is beyond amazing
bbq pork from any decent asian restaurant in china town, its the red/brown looking pork they have hanging in the windows but holy chit it is the most amazing thing ever
carnegi deli - sandwiches so big they could literally last for 3 days, i suggest the reuben.
fuq only go to times square or anywhere near it for a 1 hour period, dont spend anymore time there it is the biggest tourist trap in the whole city my jimmies get so rustled when i hear people talk about how they went to nyc and only hung out around times square and spent a whole day outside good morning america or some chit**worthless college major crew**

this. Halal cart is must. I think its open 7pm -4am. Dont go to a fake cart by accident. GO to the one with the Long line.
I been to NY a couple of times.
check out China town, CHelsea Piers, times square. Intrepid museum, central park, the big shopping street i forget what it is
You could also do the Ferry to state island and back and see the statue of liberty
Visit empire state building or better yet THe rockefellar building (360 rooftop and u can see the empire state building from high up)
cant say much for any clubs/bars, your going to spend a bunch of money this way
