    CJ's Workout - 11/18/08

    SQUAT:
    45 x 5
    45 x 5
    95 x 5
    145 x 3
    187.5 x 5
    187.5 x 5
    187.5 x 5

    PRESS:
    45 x 5
    45 x 5
    65 x 3
    87.5 x 5
    87.5 x 5
    87.5 x 5

    POWER CLEAN:
    45 x 5
    45 x 5
    65 x 3
    97.5 x 5
    97.5 x 5
    97.5 x 5

    WEIGH-IN:
    155.5 lbs

    COMMENTS:
Squats were heavy, but manageable. The bar speed for press was unbelievably fast, I even think I completed six reps for my last set. Power clean form was decent for the load. Power cleans were also a 3x5 PR, a long time since I've had one of those.

Good work on the session. . Keep everything up and stay consistent. (Something I should do...lol..)

I like the microloading. Try to progress as much as you can before you're forced to reset. .

Numbers are looking good. Two plates for deadlift next time, or will you be putting on those itty bitty 2.5 lb plates?

Thanks, Matt. I will continue with at least one more 10 lb jump, but I might switch to 5 after that. I'm surprised how long I have been using 10 lb increments.

Couldn't update this journal last night, so I'm doing it now. Squats were heavy, but that was expected. The bar speed for deadlift was surprisingly fast.
Great workout CJ, the weight is really starting to add up. I have once again another question lol when doing squats or deadlift do you breath in and hold your breath for every repetition of the exercise?

    COMMENTS:
I went into this workout thinking squats would be very heavy, but they weren't that bad. Press was very heavy, I came close to missing the last rep of the last set. The hardest part about press in general is getting the bar up for the first rep, IMO. I set another PR with power cleans.

Nice work all around. Regarding the press, the first rep on any lift that begins from a dead stop is going to be difficult. That initial effort to move the bar can take a lot out of you.

Really nice job with the power cleans. You are improving steadily with those.

I've been good thanks. I hadn't been lifting obviously if you kept an eye on my journal..I hadn't updated in quite a while. The last few weeks I've been lifting solidly and I just started a new routine to try out.

Thanks, Johnny. I honestly have no idea what I do with breathing, I just do whatever feels comfortable I guess. Ask in the SS thread if you want the real answer, as I do not know.

Good job CJ, I agree about the first rep being the hardest on presses

Good powerclean PR, are you gonna switch to 5x3 or just stay at 3x5 for now? I remember in my hs weight training class they make us do 5x10 with them

Great PC PR! And, yeah, starting the press from a dead stop is the hardest part. No stretch reflex. This is why if I ever need to take a breath during the press, I take it at the top instead of the bottom, so I can use that stretch reflex for every rep.

That does not make a lot of sense, given both the technical and dynamic nature of the lift. Training them with higher reps would be counter-intuitive to their purpose.

Exactly and it causes form issues because people get so tired they just stop caring about it.

Rippetoe suggests using air in your lungs to provide added pressure to your core, which helps it support the weight for squat, deadlift, press, bench... I take a nice big breath, tighten my trunk muscles, squat/deadlift/press, and then in between reps I'll take another breath, or multiple as necessary, tighten, and go. I'd highly recommend the book. I've found it to be a great resource.

Apologies to RipCJ and Johnny if I'm out of line for posting this response here.
