Is it not practical to have an extremely effective weapon for home defense? You own an AR15, you should understand that it is one of, if not THE MOST versatile rifle platform in the world, you can have a Home defense weapon, Hunting weapon, and target competition weapon all in one gun.

CAN WE ONCE AND FOR ALL MAKE IT VERY CLEAR THAT VERY FEW OWN AN ASSAULT RIFLE IN THE USA?
For **** sakes people, if you are going to argue about something, atleast know what the hell you are arguing about. An assault rifle, by definition, has to have select fire modes (single, burst, full auto). You have to have an FFL in order to buy an assault rifle. Criminals do not use assault rifles for three reasons:
1) they are EXTREMELY regulated by the government. Difficult to find and aquire.
2) they are very expensive compared to what a rifle (sorry, what some of you call assault rifles......) cost.
3) if you are caught with one illegally you are just plain ****ed.
It bothers me to no end when I keep seeing threads about 'assault rifles' and the 'assault rifle' bull**** on the news. THEY ARE NOT ASSAULT RIFLES.
Yes I needed to type in caps so some of you get this in your head. Please rename the thread 'should US citizens be allowed to own long rifles with extended magazines?'.
Yes I think people should be allowed to own rifles. I own actual assault rifles, and one sub machine gun: M4, Rugger 556, and an Uzi. All legally.
I think (actually I know) that most Americans are too stupid to realize that banning firearms is not the solution to our problem. The problem is our society....many many many things wrong and continuing to get worse within our society. You could call it a steady moral decline.
People used to drive around with firearms in the cab of their cars decades ago, when gun laws where pretty much non-existant or atleast very lax...yet you very rarely heard about these mass shooting we seem to hear about all the time these days. That right there should strike a bell and make you think hmmmmmmmmmmm....maybe guns aren't the problem.
I wanted to drop in and leave my thoughts here. I'm not going to bother reading this thread because the ignorance of a lot of people is going to annoy me. Educate yourself before you take a stand, and I will respect your opinion a lot more regardless of your stance. Literally everyone I have spoken to regarding this issue who wants an all out ban on firearms, knows absolutely nothing about them, nor have ANY experience with them.

Actually, I think the distinction is irrelevant. I'm thinking hard about buying a full auto M16, just because I can. I don't think it's offensive. Rather, I think what is offensive is that those with less means than I have cannot.
I'm just going to leave this here:

Firepower and accuracy can be practical:
Recently a woman shot a guy 6 times with a handgun, and he walked away... (she was actually out of bullets) if he came with a friend, she would be in trouble. Possibly raped and/or killed. Two small children were with her... Other well known cases saw things like shop owners during LA riots having to potentially defend against hundreds of looters. Or police officers with handguns being absolutely mauled by a crazy guy with a semi-auto etc.

Yes, but in the case of shooting unarmed civilians it's negligible. It's already been proven that hunting rifles and handguns can kill just as many, if not more people than "Assault Weapons", just look at the two deadliest mass shootings in history, (Norway & Virginia Tech)
So what's the point of a ban on "Assault Weapons"?
