Good stuff...
On the day you push 340 for a single, what did your prior sets look like, for that session..?? including warm ups..
And another question,
During your rep work - like the first vid 280x a bunch more than I can - it does not appear your locking out the reps... I'd put the range of motion at 80-85% in the top half... not being critical here... I am curious if this is for a reason... or are you in fact locking out and the video isn't really showing it.
I have 'double jointed' arms... I've never so much as looked into what the hell it really means, nor do I care, but the elbows don't always look locked out and I know I am locking out my reps... I make a point of it... I can also twist my elbows around a bit more than the average joe, but not quite at a circus performer's level.. lol.
Just curious man... I like to see the different approaches to things.. what works for everyone.. etc..

Questions are legit. I honestly need to work on locking out my reps. The videos do not lie. In my next run I will make that one of my goals. But, really, the range of motion is more than 80 to 85%. But, not locked out. To some people here they don't even count. But, my progressive training was to be a part of the 1-rep friendly competition as per threads' purpose. So, the 340 is the one that really counts for this thread and I did lock that out. I even held it at the top for a split second so there would not be any question.
Thanks for the points, well taken.
On the 340, the prior sets to warm up were: The bar for 20, 135 for 10, 185 for 10, 225 for 6.

To be perfectly clear, I could care less if you do half reps. If it fits your goals, then it's pure gold. Not critiquing what your doing here.. just curious.
Honestly, I was just more or less wondering why, if there is a reason or not... or just.. "it's how I bench".
That said, for 1 rep max tests, that seems like a huge jump, would have expected a few more singles in there.. 275... 300 maybe.. it works though.
Anyhow, thanks for the insight... !--

I agree with you and I took your valued comments as constructive, believe me. It helps me. Very true on the huge jump. I debated that and in the past, yes, I would do 2 resp with 275 before the big one to get my CNS more acclimated. However, on this particular progression, I experimented with the big jump and I was surprised that it was ok. On the next one, i will probably do just as you mentioned, a couple with 275, then the big one.
I was also merely explaining to you and not at all reacting negatively to you. I need honest feedback like yours. I honestly appreciate your comments and all others.Last edited by Phattso; 06-20-2013 at 11:57 AM.

It has been about five years since I have even tried to bench anything over 300, because my goals are bodybuilding with strength coming in second. Although, strength to me is very important. I haven't gone over 300 intentionally because I keep the reps from 8 to 12 per set, no matter what body-part and exercise I am working.
So, in addition to the above reply, for bench, at least for me, locking out means I am resting at the top. Sure, it is proper in competition to fully lock out. I obviously made it a habit of not locking out on multiple rep sets to keep continuous tension for bodybuilding. Not an excuse. Just a technique. Is there room for improvement? Yes, and a whole lot.
But, when I come back to this, I will improve on the upper range of motion for multiple reps on bench. However, the purpose of this thread is 1 repetition maximum and my last video with 340, I did lock out. I did post my lifts starting with 280 just to show my progression to the final 1-rep lift.
So, I am sure locking out or not fully locking out for multiple reps for bodybuilding is debatable. I am all for what works for the individual.Last edited by Phattso; 06-21-2013 at 04:06 PM.

Updating the standings:
340x7 puts your calculated at around 420, you should really just to get a video in. Polishedball has 405# lift @ 210#, you can probably edge him out.

I have not "maxed' in about 9 months. 5/3/1 has taken a little toll on me. I have a nagging bicep injury that starts to hurt on my eccentric while benching. I am not sure I can handle 1rm right now.
I might go in this week (my scheduled 5/3/1 set) and see how I feel. It would be nice to just do 4 plates. (I had almost got it 9 months ago but could not get it). That of course is a big milestone.RAW lifts

Excellent press ID!
Major props for the ballcap and the slippers. Throw on some chucks, incorporate some leg drive and do a fast touch & go...I'm thinking you might have 435ish man.
Very impressive, I'm glad you got your ass into this comp.
I'm always on spread or cool-down with you it seems, I'll be sure to get you later though...again, very impressive. Have you been squatting at all? A 1500-1600 raw total is insane/elite man, I'm hoping to get to 1500 in single ply.Eat, Sleep, Lift...Repeat!

No, I'm cutting down to 175 !
J/k guys. Thanks for the props. I think I could hit the 180's, if I had too....but I dont think my strength would be too good at those levels.
I feel good just over 200. Not super lean.....but still have abs. I know I could be stronger if I drift up, but I am always trying to find that balance. I want to look good and be strong.RAW lifts

Last heavy set on Sunday.. not bad at all for me..
In Perspective...
I started 5/3/1 with 280 being my 1rm(yea, I took 90% of that for my calculated routine). It was high, my spotter helped me get it, but I figured I was close, honestly probably 270-275 was my 1rm then. So, now, I have my old 1 rm, as part of my routine, sort of blows me away.
The real deal with 5/3/1 for me, was getting used to jumping more than 5 or 10lbs per set. Last week doing 225, then 250, then 280... 30lb jumps... was hard to adjust too.. I should say I am used to it now, but it was difficult when it started.
I'll probably reset down a couple of months instead of grinding this out... need to get some more explosiveness in... of course this is my last and heaviest working set, I don't expect to be all super speed here.. but even my 250 reps where slow.. need to work on that a bit.

I'm considering changing the weight classes to be more in line with Powerlifting but wanted to get some feedback.
67.5 kg/148.75 lb class (60.01 kg to 67.5 kg or 132.5 lbs to 148.75 lbs)
75.0 kg/165.25 lb class (67.51 kg to 75.0 kg or 149 lbs to 165.25 lbs)
82.5 kg/181.75 lb class (75.01 kg to 82.5 kg or 165.5 lbs to 181.75 lbs)
90.0 kg/198.25 lb class (82.51 kg to 90.0 kg or 182 lbs to 198.25 lbs)
100.0 kg/220 lb class (90.01 kg to 100.0 kg or 198.5 lbs to 220.25 lbs)
110.0 kg/242.5 lb class (100.01 kg to 110.0 kg or 220.5 lbs to 242.5 lbs)
125.0 kg/275.5 lb class (110.01 kg to 125.0 kg or 242.75 lbs to 275.5 lbs)
140.0 kg/308.5 lb class (125.01 kg to 140.0 kg or 275.75 lbs to 308.5 lbs)
SHW class (140.01 kg or 308.75 lbs and up)
It would breakup our current over crowded 3rd but then, do we really nice 9 weight classes? lol, seems like we might have some classes with zero to one competitors. I'd appreciate some feedback or ideas.Eat, Sleep, Lift...Repeat!

Getsum, I can only give my opinion for that it is worth. For the new classes, I think it will make it much harder as compared to the current, because the people at the upper end of the class will have a significant advantage over the people at the low end.
Case in point: I and several others at or near my weight will be competing against Rocky the freak. I don't think I will win even with the current classes, but it is more realistic.
On the other hand, if that is what Powerlifting classes look like, then I will accept and not complain. Not looking for favors.
