They were essentially on a keto diet year long. Very rarely do you see them eating wheat based carbs. Also, they were on tons of steroids and their whole life was working out.

it really just brings out the muscles. The theory in the 24-36 hours pre getting on stage is you really don't drink anything and your body hasn't had many carbs up until 2 or 3 days before the show so if a show is saturday you usually look flat, non vascular, and not that great on like wednesday.
Then you start to carb load up to the show. The carbs attract water. Since you haven't really been drinking anything the carbs pull all the water from under your skin and fill up your muscles. Thus in reality your muscles are full of water but there is none under the skin. So you look crazy full and hard.
It is quite amazing when you are VERY lean and depleted and eat those last minute carbs. You can literally watch yourself fill up.

Have you ever competed or done a ****load when totally carb depleted? many of the posters in this thread appear they havn't thus aren't used to the idea of how vital high gi carbs can be for someone who knows what they are doing.
There are so many posters in this thread who don't know jack about diet/carb manipulation etc. Go re-read my post and the answers are there. Not talking to you specifically here anymore iron monster but for others.

FAT IS YOUR FRIEND! twice the calories per Gram of carbs and proteins. You need alot less volume to reach your caloric requirements. High fat diets are also extremely beneficial to bodybuilders because your body uses lipids to produce most anabolic hormones. EFA's are needed if you're using AAS to counter the negative effects on HDL. (Yes I said HDL. AAS reduce HDL causing an imbalance that can allow LDL to increase. AAS do not directly increase LDL.)

I don't think that was the case. But....
look at the emphasis on conditioning now. You better have striated glutes, no water at all, and shredded hamstrings and able to see every muscle fiber all over your body.
it just wasn't like that in the 70's. Come in big and as lean as possible and that was good.
