Hulu Takes Digital Rights to ‘Generation Iron’
Hulu has flexed its distribution muscles and landed the exclusive digital rights to the feature-length documentary “Generation Iron,” produced by the Vladar Co. and fitness magazine publisher American Media Inc.
An extended trailer for the film is streaming on Hulu and Hulu Plus now, with the full film to be available on the two services on Dec. 17.
“Generation Iron” bows this weekend in theaters as a limited release.
Narrated by Mickey Rourke, the film follows the world’s top seven bodybuilders as they fight to bring home the coveted “Mr. Olympia” title. Film features current title holder Phil Heath, along with Kai Greene, Branch Warren, Dennis Wolf, Ben Pakulski, Hidetada Yamagishi and RoellyWinklaar.
Jerome Gary, who produced the 1977 docu “Pumping Iron,” that helped launch the careers of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno, executive produced “Generation Iron.”
Vlad Yudin directed and co-produced the film with Edwin Mejia, his partner at the Vladar Co. David Pecker, chairman and CEO of American Media Inc., is also attached as an executive producer of “Generation Iron” with Gary. AMI publishes the “Men’s Fitness,” “Muscle & Fitness” and “Shape” magazines.
Yudin shot the film in July, following athletes as they train and travel from Brooklyn to Venice, Calif. to compete in what’s considered the Super Bowl of bodybuilding.
“There hasn’t been a film dedicated to an in-depth and honest look at the sport of bodybuilding since ‘Pumping Iron,’ and a lot of things have changed since the 70s,” Yudin said. “The goal of the film is not just to show the grueling training but the individual sacrifice and immense character these athletes have. With the release of this film, I’m hoping to give these guys a platform to express themselves further to an audience that at times might misunderstand who they are and what they represent”
