As I understood it Russia had a long standing contract with Ukraine to build the bridge between Russian mainland and the Crimean peninsula, and right now it seems like the Russian and Ukraine forces aren't doing much, the threat of attacking was misinformation from a russian news channel, the Ukraine army headquarters never recieved any message from the Russian Black Sea Fleet, according to the Fleet's own headquarters.
The fact that Russia decided to walk into the Crimean region was mostly to protect their military interest in the region, the Crimean region was basically Russian territory all along anyways.
Ukrainian government representatives have said that Russia is about to lose a deal over natural gas (I think, fossil fule of some sort at least) that can cost Russia billions by the hour if the deal fall through, which it will if Russian doesn't back down from Crimea.
I'm not very updated but that's a few cliffs of what has happened so far.No hate on the mod

The only reason they do this is because the EU wants to build bases in Ukraine, and Russia wants to keep the EU in check by creating a buffer zone by capturing the Crimean region, that way Russia is keeping the EU from building its military bases near Russian military bases.
At least that's what I think, Russia will probably not expand further, but the peninsula is strategically important for Russia and that's why they deploy forces there.No hate on the mod

No this actually happened. There was also an ITV correspondant and his camera man caught up in it (which is how the whole thing was filmed). In the end they got 'rescued' by some pro russians, who immediatly ordered them to the air port and told them to leave the area and not to come back.Originally Posted by Molec

my friends family who lives in southern region close to Crimea had to leave their home few days ago and move to their relatives up north. They said **** is getting real and russian forces are not just in Crimea
