85% of medical studies conducted today are worthless and redundant. Everyone wants to have that ah ha breakthrough or produce the single study that satisfies some group's agenda. If it's not a meta study I don't care.

Is there even a scientific method anymore?

There may be something to the protein study. Just because we don't like it doesn't mean we should totally dismiss it. Doesn't mean you're going to drop dead if you eat high protein, but the idea that we should dismiss all science because of uncertainty is silly. We should be smart enough to look at the evidence and make decisions. Dismissing everything we don't like is no better than fearful overreacting.

A statistical study can be a test of association and not causation. That's one for the things you learn in regression analysis. Epidemiological studies can be misleading and biased. The case against saturated fats is an example.

As a counterpoint, here's a 'study' that shows that as global average temperature increases, so does the number of ****lian pirates:

By correlation, it can then be deduced that if we send a ****load of air conditioners to ****lia, the pirate problem will be solved.
Seriously though, statistical studies are just that---studies of numbers. Correlation doesn't necessarily equal causation.
Brilliant. Although the OP brings up a valid point it is always true; correlation is NOT causation. And this study states that plant derived protein didn't have the same effect on middle age people. This could imply that fiber is the issue, or lack of fiber and gut health overall. Gut health is key for immunity and fighting free radicals.

Also, the study says that, if the person is over 65 years ....poof... protein is now protective. This could imply cortisol is higher due to stress in the working years. Cortisol is a bad thing in excess is many many ways. Especially over time. Correlation for ya.

AND! People who lift weights actually USE the protein as it is synthesized for use by the muscles. That implies that excess protein intake by the sedentary is getting transformed into glucose by the liver via gluconeogenisis. Glucose spikes insulin. This brings on a host of inflammatory responses - as well as causing energy to be stored in fat and locked there, unable to be used for fuel when the absence of the hormone leptin tells the brain "Hey, there's no fat stored ...EAT more!". So maybe it's the excess fat that causes the cancer my fellow meat muppets.

Insulin Receptors (IR) and IGF-1R's seem to share pathways and there is heated scientific debate about how to target cancer; http://link.springer.com/article/10....032-013-0805-3
    Sh*t (important confouders) happens!

So, in the absence of large double-blind, controlled and peer-reviewed studies... we are left with anecdotal and correlative "proof". For now, I'll use the anecdotal proof of thousands of cumulative total years where BBers use >1g a day protein consumption and live long, healthy lives (other chemical use corrected).

Protein with lutein; Lutein has anti-oxidant properties which kills free radicals and mitigates for cancer. Aslo, it blocks blue light rays which create oxidative stress. There's so much more to the story when all the facts are considered.

BTW - The food pyramid which says we need to eat mostly carbs and little fat was created from an entirely correlative study. Then well-meaning politicians, in their scientific wisdom, created the food pyramid as policy. This began the biggest social experiment is history. ARE AMERICANS FATTER WITH MORE DIABETES SINCE THIS BEGAN ???????
Hats off to JerryB above as well.
