finally ordering my dream gaming pc

played hl2 engine games with 30fps back in '05-'06 and now its time to redeem myself


gtx 680 2gb
core i7 2600k
8gb kingston hyperx
120gb ssd and 2tb hdd

just get a GTX670 and I5 2500k or 3570k. put the extra $200 somewhere else like a bigger SSD

Only thing I'd recommend is for him to get at least 12gb of ram.. lol

Just between my browser (around 15 tabs open) and XBMC.. it eats up a damn near 5gb of ram. -.-

i haven't used that lately, win 7 seems more capable, or else the combination of that with my hardware makes bootup quicker.

i think i'll try it out. i don't use many programs anyways, but i'll see what i can get my boot time down to with an ssd

Yeah SSD will definitely lower boot time. The only thing that slows my boot time is my external USB drives. But that's fine with me.

im finally breaking down and getting an SSD. whatever the cheapest combination i can do to get 120-150gb. mainly cause im scared that my hdd will break down and ill loose all my ****ing school work

Definitely worth it.

But what I do for now.. is use a 64gb for Windows 7 another 64gb for Ubuntu, and another 128gb for video games and programs like photoshop/dream weaver etc..

For data in general I just use 1tb external drives.

you have to look at the socket type of the cpu and the socket on the mobo

meh thats my main hdd right now a 1tb wd black, will probably get a 40-60 for windows/browser and a 60-80 for GW2,and another game or 2

very rarely some mobos and cpus will have the same socket but wont be compatable cause of bios issues, but thats like 5% chance of that

Then you look up the type of RAM the motherboard takes (compatibility).. and you get the RAM that corresponds with it.

Look up reviews. Just because it's one of the latest models doesn't exactly mean it performs better than the older models.

^ That got me to pick the 6950 over the 7850 due to the fact that for $200 extra dollars.. it just wasn't worth it, at the time at least.

Edit: Lulz I guess the market has realized 6950 2gb edition is better.. they seem to out price the 7850 now. It used to be the other way around. Or maybe just rarity.

Look up reviews. Just because it's one of the latest models doesn't exactly mean it performs better than the older models.

Didn't even know it was a latest model ha i just search i5 3570k gaming rigs and was reading other peoples setups

still don't know what graphics card im getting yet but the rest of my rig im getting 100% not buying any of it yet anyway got to get the money and buy it piece by piece so by the time i get all the other parts another decent graphics card may be on sale ect

After being indecisive over a laptop or a desktop self build, I finally took the plunge on a gaming laptop. The job that I am in means I can quite often spend weeks or months away from home working on site so at least if I have a decent laptop it gives me the benefit of protability..

Basically a clevo p170em assembled by a UK company called pcspecialist, the laptop is called a 'Vortex III'. Decided to go for this over the alienware m17x r4 as the alienware's looks were a bit too gaudy for me, the warranty was ridiculously expensive to extend to 3 years and it would have cost around £400 more to get the same spec as the Vortex III. The Vortex also has an amazing screen when upgraded to the 72% gamut matte 1080p which I prefer to the glossy finish on the alienware.

so, my system crashed twice while playing bf 3 yesterday.

what could cause that?

i was thinking maybe a power issue but my psu is 650 w, so maybe it was related to crossfire. i took out my 2nd card, turned down a few settings in game and played a whole round with no issues.

Is the Xfire a recent thing? 650W is pretty low for SLI or Xfire tbh. I'm going to say you don't have enough power or one/both of the cards are over heating.

i've had cross fire for a few months. maybe my hardware is just getting old, they are dual ati 5850s

That's probably it. The TDP on 5850s is low, 90W at idle and 151W at peak load. Two which will peak during BF3 will pull out 300W. Now, how high is the OC on your CPU and what kind of CPU is it? I'd say the GPUs are causing the issues, but 300W isn't a ton. One of my 570s pulls 250W by itself, both of them in SLI pull 500W and I've never had issues. But I'm assuming this started happening once you put in the second card?

no i had them crossfired for a while but i haven't really been utilizing the 2nd card because i mostly play swtor in windowed mode, which doesn't use crossfire for some reason.

and i haven't overclocked my cpu at all, which is a amd phenom II x4 945.

I'd do some more testing with the cards, then. Play BF3 with them on and see what happens, if some goes wrong then play it again with one card on. Do this like twice, if you get any problems.
