Confronted by dude with knife with your GF. What would you do?

GF and I take short walk at midnightish in relatively safe area. Turn corner and there is a 6'4" black dude (no racist) about 20 feet from us with a fairly large knife. Keep in mind this all happened in a matter of a few seconds.

He is coming straight towards us and says "SHUT THE **** UP!" I'm thinking I can't try to run because he obviously grabs GF. But then my GF just takes off. So I take off running in a slightly different direction so that if he goes after her I can still intervene but also so that I can steer him away if he goes after me. LUCKILY, he went after me. I ran faster than I've ever run and after a FULL MINUTE he finally stopped chasing me. He was pretty ****ing close at one point and I think there is at least a decent chance he would have stabbed me. Didn't think I'd get away. I'm not that fast. Luckily my gf is fast as **** for a chick or I wouldn't have gotten to run.

What would you have done? Be honest.

I can joking around fight with my buddies, but if I am in a legitimate confrontation I freeze up.

If he was coming at me, I can't honestly tell you what I'd do. I'd be too slow to run and would be trying to gather my thoughts. But on the contrary I think it's adrenaline, I feel nothing, I feel like I am at the top of the world and I am invincible.
