that's a good idea, I actually usually ride in the suburbs (the great western trail) I have a hybrid so my tires can handle the gravel and limestone and I don't have to worry about cars and stop lights etc. I was planning on doing the lakeshore path one of these days in the early afternoon on a weekday since its all paved and you can go fast as hell.

I have a cyclocross bike myself, Redline Conquest Pro. I have a set of road wheels/tires and more cyclocross wheels/tires, and right now I have the cyclocross set on there. I've never ridden out in the suburbs. Is it pretty flat out there, or are there some hills?

Riding at night in downtown Chicago is so amazing, though. Highly suggest going down Michigan Ave at 3 am and around the loop. Seeing such a big city empty out at night is so awesome.

Given me a great idea, I'm def doing this at some point in the summer. The suburbs have some hilly areas, I was just in st. charles today and went up the biggest hill I've seen around here, obviously nothing like some where out west but it was good. Much more hilly than anything on the lake shore path for sure.

All ride distances should be chosen by which cafe you want to go to midway or at the end.

I have a bar mount for my iPhone. I use map my ride for computer/gps/maps. Never get lost anymore, I can explore anywhere and always get myself home.

The TDF is the Super Bowl of Cycling (or World Cup of Cycling if you're not American)

Those guys are the best of the best, and have been training & dreaming of making that race since they were kids.

how does one get into the tour de france? srs

Normally most cyclists are European. They start riding at a young age and eventually do junior racing in Europe. Eventually if they are good they get invited onto a U23 team or a development team. If they show their potential at that point they are brought onto a team as a neo pro and do a few small pro status races. In time they 'graduate' to the real team and start doing races with them. It is very very rare that a neopro does Le Tour de France (there is an American neopro there this year! Tejay van Garderen). Most guys go thru the ropes for a few years and hope that they get selected for their teams Tour squad (each team has up to 30 or so riders on it...only 9 do the tour). Some Pros never even get the chance to do TDF.


As an American it is a bit different. You work your way thru the junior ranks then hopefully get picked up by a dev team (currently Trek and Garmin have the biggest ones) or you get picked up by USA Cycling's dev team and go over to Belgium to do some racing. Belgium is THE european training grounds for American cyclists. There they learn if they are really cut out for european cycling, which is way different then in the US. At that point...they hopefully work their way onto a team, which is becoming easier for Americans since we have 3 Pro Tour status teams based out of the us (HTC, BMC, and Garmin). Others do the US domestic team route and race around the US hoping to get spotted by a big team and getting to the big ranks. Some US domestic guys don't end up doing so well in the Pro Tour (see Ivan Dominguez!).

All in all it takes a lot of work to get into the TDF; the guys there are the BEST at what they do which is easily one of the hardest sports on the planet. Well...unless you are French and on a French team...then you kind of get to go by default at times (FDJ, Cofidis, Europcar).

Cateye wireless is always good. If you can afford Garmin Edge 500 is awesome for all the features and ability to automatically load rides on to your pc with the Garmin logging and graphing speed/heart rate/etc. Also makes tracking training much easier.

I'm partial to Shimano RS80's.. can be had in Australia retail for about 600~. Light, spin well and very stiff. Great training wheel, can be raced on no problem also.
