How do i convince a 16 year guys mom that lifting weights is not going to kill him?
Ok heres the situation one of my neighbors has 16 year old son that has started coming over to my place to lift weight, and his mom is totally spazzing out on him claiming that he'll get hurt lifting weights that he'll end up with a bad heart, high bloodpresure, etc etc,and has forbade him to lift weights telling him he can visit me but not lift weights that if he wants exercise he should just go for walks. 0_0
I didn't know they had people that still had that kinda outmoded view on lifting weights left in America!!!

Just show her some of our bodyspace profiles. Many here including myself have been lifting since at least 16 yrs old. Last I checked I'm still alive and posting on here.

Personally I think it's crazy to take on the responsibility (liability) of training someones child, particularly if that someone is against the idea.
Even if you make a good case for weight training and that kid gets hurt, your ass and possibly your home will belong to mom." ----------I`m your Huckleberry......'"

Dude stop being sick.I have known the family forever. The truth be let out she doesn't let him do a damned thing that envolves sports of any kind for fear he's going to get hurt.
Shes an over protective person. She won't even let him learn how to defend himself against bullys.

Why is it that important to you that a 16 y.o. boy comes over to your place to lifts weights?
I probably wouldn't let my son go over either.
Not trying to be an ass, but it seems weird to me.
I'm sure she knows it's perfectly healthy for him to do so; she's probably making excuses because she doesn't want her teenage son hanging out with an adult male.Insta: flexjs

To me it sounds like you are trying to make something out of it that it's not.
As a matter of fact I was in my yard lifting and he came over and asked me if he coudl start workingout with me,I asked him why and he told me the whole situation about him being the smallest guy in his class and being bullied and all,so I said yeh if he wanted to he could because I myself have been down that road as a teen.
And for you're info she doesn't allow any of her kids to play any sports at all she's rather close minded on that.as a matter of fact she told me it's all a waste of time and if I wanted to drop dead of a heart attack from muay thai and weightlifting thats my thing, but he kids aren't doing any of that kinda stuff because it's bad for a persons heart 0_0
I was like what if he gets a manual labor job then when he gets out of school?
It wasn't until her oldest son whose 20 moved out of her house that he had the chance to start playing sports.Last edited by Cromshammer; 05-29-2011 at 12:10 PM.

His mom "Tina"??
---
hello everyone, I am a firm believer in holistic medicine and the power of yoga and it is my personal belief that one can attain strength and health through these two things
my son, however, does not think similarly. he is on a work-out program called "starting lifts" that is extremely dangerous: they use a barbell with very heavy weights and then do excercises that can destroy the back and knees (for example, one he calls the deathlift)
well, I am unable to convince him to stop this crazy program. my problem is I caught him taking the steroid "creatine" yesterday after his work-out. I snatched the container away from him and told his father later that evening, who agreed with me that we had to stage an intervention. I honestly do not know what I should do next. does he have to be sent to a rehabilitation center? I am not familiar with steroids and how abusers make recovery.
thank you very much,

Well he dropped off some of my X-box games about 10 mintues ago,and said he's going to wait until his 17 birthday which is in 4 months, then he's moving out and going to find a place with some of his freinds to crash while they look for jobs and then he's going to start working out that way she can't say squat.
And seeing as I have a Martial Art's school of my own,I told him that him and his freinds could move into the rooms there on the second floor when he move sout of his nutball moms.Plus it will give him a better chance to workout seing as I am moving the weights and equipment there. And no i'm not teaching Muay Thai,i don't have enough knowldge in it to teach it,i'm teaching a reconstructed/revived martial art from Voctorian England called bartitsu.
Heres a little info on it:
Bartitsu was first introduced to Europe in 1898 by Edward William Barton-Wright, who had studied Tenjin Shinyō-ryū and Shinden Fudo Ryu in Yokohama and Kobe, respectively. He had also trained briefly at the Kodokan in Tokyo. Upon returning to England he folded the basics of all of these styles, as well as boxing, savate and French stick fighting, into an eclectic self-defence system called Bartitsu.

So why do you want to get involved in this family's issues?
F'k; I can't even stand getting into garbage in my own family. I don't go out fo my way to get involved in others.
If the kid's mom doesn't want him lifting weights then that should be enough for you.
Seems strange to me, and probably this whole story is made up, but if it's true then don't meddle. He's not your kid.
End of story.Insta: flexjs

So you're perfectly fine with causing tension or whatever between this kid and his mother and imposing YOUR value system or whatever you want to call it upon their family.
Wow. OK.
Carry on then.
As an aside how will lifting weights stop him from being bullied? Wouldn't a self defense class be a more direct solution to the problem???Insta: flexjs

Man there was tension between them already,..don't help when he's getting the crap beat out of him by 3 people and his mom is standing at the front door just watching, and then when i spot it run over their and stop them and she runs out there screaming at me telling me they where just playing.
How the heck can you defend yourself if you are weak and not in condition to fight?
Well look in a few months the situation will be taken care of because when he turns 17 he's moving out,and along with some of his freinds who I teach Bartitsu to are moving in the living space above my gym, which menas he can workout and learn to defend himslf without any squak from his mom.
And whats wrong with instilling proper manly values of being strong and healthy and being able to stand up for your self?I mean hey at least i'm being a psoitive ROLE MODEL,how many young men his age in todays world have that?? Not too many it seems!
You not one of these people that are promoting the pussification of todays youth are you?
