    Crystal light

From a macronutrient standpoint, I can fit in crystal light since they are all zero.. My question is about the sugars... Will drinking is cause any type of detrimental spike is insulin?

it's been shown that after a while of consuming artificial sugars and sweeteners your body will react to them the same way as it does regular sugars. your body has a way of not adjusting very well to being tricked which is why they say if you wanna lose weight don't just go to diet soda, get rid of it all together.

diet soda in some cases can cause weight gain because of the bodies reaction to the sweeteners.

Your original post is misleading because it reads as "artificial sweetners (though CALORIE-LESS) can physiologically cause weight gain" which is impossible.

This article just states what many already know about artificial sweetners: "In the Purdue study, the rats whose diets contained artificial sweeteners appeared to experience a physiological connection between sweet tastes and calories, which drove them to overeat"

Once again, though, its a matter of mental aptitude and just being smart about what you eat and taking things in MODERATION. If you want some Diet Pepsi, have ONE CAN, not a HALF GALLON--simple.

    You are contradicting yourself
You can drink a gallon of Diet Pepsi if you want with no weight gain (calories would be very minimal). The issue with artificial sweetners isnt it causing you to eat drink more diet pepsi, its if it triggers you to crave and eat calorie containing food.

"The taste buds taste sweet, but there's no calorie load that comes with it. There's a mismatch here. It seems it changes your brain chemistry in some way," Savard said. "Anything you put in your mouth, your body has a strong reaction to it. It's much more than counting calories. It seems normally with sweet foods that we rev up our metabolism."
Well, this is bull. The study is already proven false by the idea that putting the diet drink in your mouth and spitting it out will supposedly cause weight gain. Also, your taste buds do not sense quantity. If you chug down a drink, it is your eso****us that first senses the quantity of food that is allowed to go into your stomach (which is why chugging too much too fast usually ends up in it being spit back out). But your eso****us doesn't affect your brain. It is only once food hits your stomach that anything can even start to happen to your body and brain. Of course, the study talks nothing about the actual digestion of artificial sweeteners and how they might affect you through that pathway. Because taste buds work on duration and intensity, you would have to have some sort of connection between these measurements and how they affect the brain. If this were to pan out, then sugar would do the same thing since it would trigger the same taste bud in the same manner. There just isn't enough info to make a conclusion here.

The only thing I can think that could possibly make this true is that if artificial sweeteners could somehow affect you sub-lingually, but that is pretty doubtful since it'd have to reside under your tongue for a prolonged duration. OR, perhaps that the artificial sweeteners somehow make you retain more of the calories that you eat (which doesn't really seem likely). OR, that artificial sweeteners cause water retention (hence "weight gain").

"In the Purdue study, the rats whose diets contained artificial sweeteners appeared to experience a physiological connection between sweet tastes and calories, which drove them to overeat."
Taking a step back in the study, the only other thing I can think is that this is psychological, not physiological. People who tend to consume more diet drinks also have issues with control over their eating. The number of times I see overweight people buying large amounts of soda is just disturbing (I have the bad habit of always paying attention to what the person ahead of me is buying at the grocery store lines). It goes with saying that eating sweets makes people tend to crave more sweets, or more food in general. But that goes with any sort of food. Salty food makes people crave liquids (think about why theme parks have the popcorn stand conveniently near the soda stands). I could go on, but you get the idea...

what don't you understand about "the bodies reaction to it?"

i'm not saying the sweetener itself causes anything, i'm saying your BODY does. as does the purdue study.

salted nuts and pretzels at bars too

But as for sweetners and cravings
Sugar causes cravings too. Better to eat calorie free substance causing cravings than all the calories + cravings.

yes SOME people do release insulin just out of reaction to the sweet even though it is artifical .

YES if you are a no carb diet there are sugars in sugar free drinks like malto and dextrose that do add up ...
