youd think that walking a mile and runnin a mile would burn that same amount of cals due to the time difference of the activity
walking a mile 20 mins
running a mile say 8 mins
but that doesnt take in account afterburn effect
or the fact that you could run 3 miles in the same time that you walked 1 mile and people are time drivenmy blogs

running on a treadmill, and especially walking on a treadmill are very different from walking/running on a trail, etc. on atredmaill u r really just bouncing up and down while running, and same thing while walking, cuz u just have to pick up and move ur leg, u do not actually have to propel your body. they are incomparable.

No. You burn more calories at higher heart rates exponentially.
This is 100% fact. Do some research on it before you listen to people who think "common" sense tells you otherwise.
Also, any running calculator on running forums will do the same. While the same work is performed, calories are not the same.I Rep back always. Put it in comment.

The OP said running a mile vs walkin a mile. Since common sense isn't your thing I'll help you out with an example. Two guys line up dude #1 is going to walk a mile and dude # 2 is going to run it. They start. Dude #2 finishes in 15 minutes while the other guy is still walking. Dude #2 takes a nap consuming a negligible amount of calories. Dude #1 is still walking consuming calories after about 30-40 minutes dude #1 finishes.
Even though the runner consumed a lot of calories it was over a much shorter period of time.

Are you an idiot? Seriously "amg i feel it more therefore it's better." The **** you gotta pay attention to is time, yes TIME! Like the dude that gave the example above. Takes 30 mins to walk a mile, 12 minutes to jog it. If the guy that jogs it in 12 minutes then rests for 18 minutes he will be in the exact same position as the guy who walked it in 30 minutes. Probably burn in a little more calories because he did the mile+rest for 18 minutes, and in rest you also burn calories.

I cannot post links but if you google "Saunas Burn Calories", you will see so many sites that discuss this. You can also look up "infrared sauna calories".
You are heating you body, it has to sweat to cool off. Your heart rate also goes higher. Where will this energy come from for extra work your body is doing?
The weight loss in sauna is just water weight which comes back when you drink water. That is another story but if you are counting calories, you can lose them in sauna .Last edited by snigam; 08-16-2010 at 11:53 AM.

Not sure if this will help the discussion or confuse folks even more......
But, I use a Garmin Forerunner when I run ( and walk ). If I walk at a moderate-slow pace and cover a mile ( in 18-20 mins ) , it shows me that I have burnt 99 calories for that mile.
However, when I run a 8-9 min mile, it shows me that I have burnt 130 calories for that mile.
So obviously, when the distance is the same, they are using some formula that factors in the pace/speed to calculate the calorie burn.

Again, you're missing the duration aspect.
Walking a mile takes 15-20 minutes.
Running a mile takes 6-8 minutes.
It's the calories per hour X duration that gives you the answer.
So let's say walking burns 7 calories a minute and running burns 15 calories a minute.
Walking = 15x7=90
Running = 7x15=90
Obviously, if you said running 15 minutes or walking 15 minutes the answer is clearer.

You want some numbers. Here are the actual numbers from a Nordictrak treadmill. I have it at home.

Incline set to 1. My weight 136lb:
walking speed of 2 miles/hr - 60 cal burned in 1km
jogging speed of 4 miles/hr - 79 cal burned in 1km

However, running doesn't always burn more calories than walking, and once again, this has to do with efficiency of movement. If you jog at a slow, barely-pick-up-your-feet pace, you'll burn a respectable 8 calories per minute -- but walking at a pace that is so speedy you have to wiggle your hips and swing your arms madly to keep yourself from breaking into a run can burn a massive 15 calories per minute. The so called "cross over" or "gray zone" pace, where walking becomes very strenuous, occurs somewhere at around 4 to 5 miles per hour for most people. So in other words, a 150-pound person running a mile at a 5 mph might burn 96 calories and 180 calories walking over the same distance and at the same speed.
And who RUNS at 5mph? Wack..
