Yeah Aztecs are up there, as are the Mongols. Among smaller tribes in the Americas and in West Africa cannibalism was common.

Native North American tribes can be brutal, some West African ones, also ancient mesopotamian ones (Think Assyria, Phoenicia, etc)

does the 'ancient version' of a culture have any bearing on the modern version of the culture, or is it so far removed at that point

Keep in mind that while Europe had palaces and castles, fountains and all that great looking stuff, the Aztecs were cutting out hearts and throwing people off pyramids.

There were cities in America at that time.

I heard a stat about the Mongols that at the time of them sweeping across Asia, they killed the equivalent of 10% of the Earth's population at the time.

So that's like somebody today killing 800 million people, or twice the population of the US.
