Hello,
I'm wondering if back braces should be used for herniated discs, and how long?

Sorry about your back, sounds terrible. Anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen can help (Advil, Motrin). Take with food. There are plenty of stretches that are recommended that might be helpful, just search the internet. Some people swear by inversion tables to decompress your spine and others say they do nothing. You can also hang with your hands with a pull up bar and toe touch.
Might be a good idea to see a doctor and get an MRI if not improving, although I’m not sure how accessible that is for you in Canada.
Edit: to answer your question I don’t think a back brace will do anything to help your disc. When there is a disc problem the muscles around your spine tend to spasm. This is your body’s self defense mechanism to let you know something is wrong, limiting your movement to prevent further injury. Recently someone explained that the pain from a disc problem is like an innate or built in embryo logic signal that something is really wrong. Back braces tend to limit mobility and some say it is better to move more. Hope you feel better.Last edited by EricAtl; 04-12-2022 at 07:26 PM.
