Ok I've got to ask, are you guys with these blem dumbbells not planning on using them? They're going to get beat up, what's the big deal? Kind of like the first scratch on a new car, it's out of the way don't have to worry about it any more.

New (to me) 20 Kg bumpers. Here are the colors I've used when repainting 80's era bumpers. The color of 25 Kg bumpers seems to be a consistent red, but the 15 and 20 Kg colors vary. You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

For me I'm building a gym for life. In that quest I have managed to acquire some premium stuff including Ivanko bars, plates and vintage unbranded. I fell in love with the vintage style equipment and the collector in me took over. I had a complete set of hex dumbbells but I wanted to upgrade because the quality was poor and it was the only thing in my gym that was cheap. So I started looking for the roundheads. Figured the legacies would be a good substitute but the forgings is some cases are worse then the hex. I don't care about the paint, but they currently look like turds on sticks.

From the refurb thread:
https://forum.bodybuilding.com/showt...6831351&page=2
I've been working on this barbell that was fairly rusty. The sleeves spin well so I have not tried to pull them off yet. Been cleaning with 3-1 around the collars, wd40 penetrating with a brass tooth brush for the knurling. I used a little CLR on some areas of the sleeves. It's looking much better, but I'm not sure I'll ever get the knurling completely clean. I'm going to wire wheel around the collars some more. Then I'll have to decide what to do since I don't "need" two York bars.

I don't mind my stuff looking worn and used - but I like to be the one to put it there. Since 99% of the stuff in my gym was bought used - I think I've repainted and/or refurbished everything in it.
Also, I bought the attached from a forum member. I was really only interested in the 100 pounders, but ended up with my first Roundheads!STAND TALL AND SHAKE THE HEAVENS!!

Picked up 80's curl bar where the sleeves are attached with roll pins along with 2 additional sleeves. The bar has knurling unlike my other York curl bar
Thinking of giving it Oakely's treatment.

Front one which has sleeves removed seems to be 70's bar .
The other one is 80's curl bar as per the seller.
Extra pair of sleeves.
Sleeves with roll pins
knurling
Sleeves on 70's bar (No knurling) with little cleaning.

My '78 still had most of the blueing. There's not too much you can do to that wont remove the blueing. I just carefully used a green pad until there were a couple bare metal spots then quit. Point of diminishing returns. I used some cold blue to darken them, you can see the difference if you look, but it took the shine off.

York plates painting.
The ? is, is Krylon semi gloss is close match for the 80's non USA marked plates? The reason for asking that is what seller said. He does know about York.
Got a few along with the curl bar which were painted flat black. Want to restore them to original paint.
I do understand the following
1. lb plates flat black/Satin black based on the choice.
2. RH semi gloss
3. kg plates satin black.
I also tried low gloss black the weaksuz recommended on different plates.[M]===[6]▪ Mech6 Crew #35 ▪[M]===[6]

Do you remember your first? Finally able to pick up my first split sleeve. The blueing is nearly flawless. They had the knurling taped up which preserved the metal. It looks like goo gone is taking all the sticky residue off as we speak...Ill post some more pics when its done. When I saw it posted I left work...from metro had to walk .7 miles. Bought it and saw other plates I wanted. Walked .7 back to metro then another 1 mile to my place. Olympic bars arent extremely heavy but carrying one 1.7 miles becomes difficult. Worth it for $50 though!
Here are some pics of 45's, 25's and 10's. $0.43/lb...again couldnt pass up. After dropping off the olympic bar I grabbed by sh*tty dolly and a large tupperware thing and walked 1.7 miles back. Called my boss and told him I was sick and was leaving for the day even though I was gone for an hour already, lol. Again it was horrible pushing them 1.7 miles back to my place. It was one of those collapsible dolly things we bought from costco...its trash for the most part but wife had the car.

You two are making me glad I decided not to buy the 105+ lb Legacy dumbbells.
I am convinced that my plan on getting the 120 and 165 add on kits for my IronMasters is the way to go. The add on kits also take up much less room than the individual dumbbells, which was originally the deciding factor against the Legacy DBs. I barely have room for my 5 to 100 lb set of Roundheads. I can find room for the IronMaster stand in my office gym.O─O York Barbell Crew #53 O─O

Great score, that bar appears to be in excellent shape, use it well. I've easily got an hour in of cleaning on my bar and it is no where near your bar in terms of finish. Never will be.
There are lots of threads regarding rusty plates. If you don't want to repaint, I Would clean with Wd40, penetrating formula works well. Then get wire wheel or a bunch of small brass tooth brushes and scrub them with 3 in 1. When finished then wipe down with wd40.
If you are going to repaint then use the citric acid method, clr, sand blasting, or electrolysis.

Thanks for the tip. I have some 00 steel wool on hand. It worked well for getting rid of most of the visible rust. The middle of my bar looks much better - nice and shiny. I have only a few spots of rust left on my bar. I did not rub too hard. I did not want to remove any of the coating.
Now to get out the wire wheel for the sleeves and inside collars.O─O York Barbell Crew #53 O─O

Picked up more goodies over the weekend. Lot of vintage plates.
Some deep dish 35's.
4 deep dish yorks. They didnt have too much rust...I didnt have a wire brush so I just used a scrub brush and some dawn soap. Ill clean them better when I have time. I dont plan on painting...patina is too nice.
I did buy another deep dish but traded it over the weekend with a single dan lurie plate. The york had some damage...not really sure what the value of a single damaged plate would be. Also...couldnt find much on the dan lurie plate...it was nice though...also deep dish. I kinda sorta regret getting rid of the york already. It really wasnt that bad. What do you think the value is on the york 45 and lurie plate? Hopefully I didnt take a beating on those.
Just a random picture of all the plates laying out. Not sure if the 25's in the front are york but I believe they are. According to https://docs.google.com/document/d/1...ilebasic?pli=1 they look like the ones shown under the "late 30's to 40's era." They have the 25 stamped on the top/bottom face...very hard to see. The billard olympic ones are also nice.

Yo Bulk - Seriously on that score? Deep Dish 35's? You are in some rare company possessing those babies. Well done. Rest of what I see there not too shabby either.

I wont even bother telling you how much I paid...I dont think the person knew what they had or cared. The same person also sold me all those bars I recently picked up...also for a really good deal.
With that being said...would you use the 35's or just display them? I didnt realize they were that rare...same with the deep dish 45's...I assume people use them and they're not just for show.
I have about 10 of the york 45 milled ones...the later year ones that are easy to find...I could always use those and just look at the others.

Well - Plenty of DD 45's out there.
But regarding the DD 35's, if it were me, they (the 35's) would complete an Early 1950's set along with my 45's, 25's and unmarked change plates. Therefore, they would have to proudly be on display. However, certainly no harm in throwing them on a bar for actual use. Only thing I wouldn't do is abuse them with drops and such. But then again I wouldn't abuse any iron set for that matter. So lift away, or display. Either way, congrats on owning them. Really special.▪█──────█▪ Equipment Crew #64 ▪█──────█▪
