Suppose to slice better due to the guillotine angle of the blade. However, I haven't tried one yet.
Here's another slant that was recently released by Fine Accoutrements that I'm thinking about trying out.

I picked up the 37c after seeing that a close shave with the 34c required 4+ passes plus touch ups. Definitely should have perfected technique, I'm still struggling with it on my neck but definitely delivers the closest shave I've ever had. I'm playing with blades. So far voskhod and gillette nacet seem to do well, some minor irritation but much less than an Astra or gsb even with zero pressure (literally so light thag it doesn't even cut and still irritation). I feel like if I can get down to no irritation this will be my regular razor. If not, I'll try to pick up a slim.

Have you mapped your beard? If you keep trying to match strokes to face topography and then numerous clean-up passes, you're going to get irritation. Especially if you have inconsistent blade angles.
Try the Gillette 7 o'clock *super* stainless made in russia, I've been really surprised by the consistent smoothness and sharpness for the price. If what I've posted offends you, please feel free to leave your need for validation below.

I have been doing traditional wet shaving for five years now and up until this point have not really used a specific bowl for wet shaving. I am thinking about purchasing a bowl specifically for this point does anybody use one and is there any recommendations out there. I found a resource on the best shaving bowls has anybody tried any of these http://www.primandprep.com/best-shaving-bowls/

just had my first shave last night.
EJ DE89 with a Derby blade as that is what it came with.
just bought a cheapy shave set from Walgreens that had a boar brush, puck of soap and bowl. Didn't want to break the bank on my initial set in case I didn't like it but I intend on getting a better brush and soap here pretty soon.
As expected I got a great shave but did take me a long time and a lot spot shaving after the first 2 full passes. I only cut myself once on the lip trying to get as close as possible but other than that it's a decently close shave. I still have some irritation but I'm thinking with the addition of some post shave balm and improving my technique this will not be an issue in the future.
I plan on using up my Derby blades on technique. I ordered up a blade sample pack that has
Astra SP
Persona Lab Blue
Persona Israeli Red
Voskhod
GSB
ZAZA
Shark SC
Wilkinson German
Racer SS
I'll try those out to see which ones I like best. Doing research I found these to be the blades most people agree are the smoothest while still having a good sharpness and forgiveness. I don't have a ton of facial hair so sharpness wasn't a huge concern for me. I hear Feathers and Kais are great but also very very sharp so I opted out of those.hard to hate on a fellow wings fan but....
i need to cut... badly.

Is it sad that I am looking at selling my straights and strops? I use them a few times a year as it is and I just do not have the time to put towards them. Feels bad.....

Despite still having a good stock of Feathers I grabbed a build-your-own blade sampler from Maggard's. Got some good standbys like Polsilver, Gillette Silver Blue, Personna Platinum, Astra, and Shark Chrome. Absolutely hate the Shark Chrome. First shave with a fresh blade felt like a week-old blade no matter what soap or cream I used.
Been holding back from buying any soaps or creams but couldn't resist getting Pacific Shave Co's Caffeinated cream and ASB at Target while it was on promo. The cream has a menthol kick and lathers up really well like other Pacific creams. The ASB is quite thick and may not work for oily brahs like me. The caffeine is probably more of a gimmick than possessing any benefit but it feels nice.

Im still into collecting and restoring antique shaving equipment, but i haven't shaved with my stuff in a long time. I mostly use a trimmer to buzz my scruff down, mostly because of the look and the fact that i don't run the risk of ingrowns. Although, i didn't really have a problem with ingrowns using wetshaving techniques
Im thinking about getting back into using my straights on a more regular basis for touch ups. Basically, for my neck, mid to upper cheeks and shaping.

I told my doctor about my painful ingrown hairs that I've detailed in these threads. He prescribed me an antibiotic that cleared up my skin immediately. Since then I haven't had a single ingrown in months no matter how close my shave is.

Been wanting an artisan that is an actual cream as opposed to the millions of soaps and croaps out there. Finally orderes some Als shaving cream. This stuff is legit. Lather is a 10/10 and it is an actual cream not some half breed like most of them. I got the goodfellas scent, very sweet but it is nice. Smells a lot like Blenheim Bouquet without the pine note.

Taking the plunge with this. Ordered a Merkur 34C, 100 blade sample pack, and a stand from Amazon. I picked up a brush and soap from E&C years ago and use that off and on with cartridge razors.
What am I in for when starting out? My understanding is let the razor do the work. It'll be interesting, lol.

Welcome to the crew!
Expect some frustration early on. You'll have to un-learn all those shaving habits you've developed from cartridge shaving. Yes, the razor will do the work once you get used to feeling the weight of it on your face. It may take a few days or a few weeks to get comfortable with it, getting used to dragging the razor along the contours of your face and knowing how many times to go over the same section without irritation. If you stick with it before you know it you'll be yielding quality shaves in little time and be very happy with the results.
Pick a good basic blade and stick with it for a few weeks before trying out some of the other, sharper blades in your sampler. You'll want to get the technique down so that you can really notice the differences between blades and then you'll find your favorite. If your sampler includes Astras or Gillette Silver Blues you may want to use them first. I also like Wilkinson Sword (available at most drug stores) and Personna Platinums.
Keep us posted and good luck!"Above all, we must realize that no arsenal, or no weapon in the arsenals of the world, is so formidable as the will and moral courage of free men and women. It is a weapon our adversaries in today's world do not have."--Ronald Reagan

Unless they sub things out I will have the following to try: Crystal Super +, Shark Super Chome, Shark Stainless, Astra Platinum, Astra Stainless, 7AM Platinum and SHARP Stainless blades
I'll be working my way through this thread to learn more. I'm hoping it'll help with the ingrown hair issue. What a pain that is, lol.

I own a Merkur 34C. It's an excellent starters razor, although I shift between that one, a Merkur Futur and an 1952 Gillette SuperSpeed.
About blades. The best thing is to try out different brands and see which ones work best for you. Many say that the (for instance) the red Personna blades or Derby are great, but I prefer Wilkinson Sword. Right now I'm using cheap Bic Astor that I bought in Greece and they work quite well.
Avoid Feather, those things will cut you up if you're a beginner.
And finally, check this channel for great tips on wet shaving.

Well my stuff came in and there was a slight change in the blade sampler. I have Astra stainless, Astra platinum, Sharp, 7 Am plus, Shark super chrome, Crystal, and Treet platinum. The Treet replaced the Shark stainless.
I'll go see if B&B has any info on the blades. I have already read that Feathers are extremely sharp and not noob friendly. I will try one of the Astras first based on what artDPP mentioned unless I hear I have a better option to start with in my sampler.

Agreed. Don't try a Feather until you're a little more comfortable with your technique.
Most guys like Astra blades. They are super cheap if you buy the 100 pack off Amazon. They just don't do it for me though. I've got really thick and coarse facial hair and they don't quite get the job done.
My favorite blades, by a long shot, are Gillette Silver Blues.
