I've read the replies 7 times and I deeply, truly have no idea why you are so confused/upset/obsessed with the words "assault weapon" being in quotations so I'm going to assume you're trolling or confused.
If you are in fact confused over the quotations and not trolling, I'm going to attempt to explain it to you. Him putting those words in quotes could have meant a myriad of things but given the context I'M going to assume he meant to use it in a sarcastic sense. By doing this he was mocking how broad of a definition "assault weapons" is (in case I lost you just there, I quoted "assault weapon" because it is proper grammar to quote the words you are referencing). Think of it like this; if someone said to you "Your vagina is sandy as fuk", and you replied, there'd be a good chance you would do air quotes around "Sandy as fuk" because you're both quoting what was said to you and reiterating how outlandish that statement is (because your vagina is clearly sandier than the Hawaiian islands). You wouldn't do it because you don't understand that phrase or are pretending to not understand it, you're doing it for several logical, comedic and thought out reasons.
Cliffs: -You're probably trolling
- If you're not trolling, I help you understandThe best advice that I was ever given, was to give up.
(It fuarkin means people pushed me to try harder in order to disappoint them, you idiots.)

Because the term can be extremely narrow (a full auto weapon) or extremely broad (any weapon, regardless of select-fire capability or magazine capacity, presence of internal or external magazines or their absence, presence or absence of given external features which are extremely common).
The lack of definition of the term makes it literally impossible to know what you're talking about.

It carries a negative connotation, which was exactly the purpose of inventing such a nonsensical term. We refuse to use it like it's a real term because it shouldn't be in common use.
If someone drops the N-word in front of you, you would lose your mind. You would, however, know exactly what they were talking about.
Stop acting like you don't understand why gun owners don't like terms that were invented to inspire fear of firearms."America is at that awkward stage: It's too late to work within the system, and too early to shoot the bastards."

Assault rifles are machine guns, and they are already effectively banned.
To buy a machine gun, you have to find one of the 186,000 which were manufactured and registered with the ATF prior to 1986. You then have to wait a year while they process your $200 application to own that one specific firearm. You then have to pay a private person roughly $30,000 for their firearm, or more if it's one of the rarer ones.
There has not been a single crime committed with the 186,000 transferable machineguns since the NFA came into effect in 1934. NOT ONE.
You have no idea what you're talking about.
