Regardless, I always want people to be themselves. It takes the guesswork out of deciding whether or not I should like them.

Agreed. I know when I was a kid I always heard that one in cartoons and TV shows. It always came across as never do anything to improve yourself or your position in life. Never broaden your horizons or try new things. Nope, just keep on doing the same ol' **** you've been doin'. Who the hell would want to live like that? Sounds pretty boring if you ask me.

Also just what is your self? I've always believed the self is the accumulation of all of your experiences in life that go into shaping who you are. Since you are a living breathing person that self is always changing. Unless maybe you're a vegetable or a corpse. The self you were when you were 5 isn't the self you were as a baby. The self you were when you were 14 isn't the self you were when you were 6. Ideally the self you were when you were 23 isn't the self you were when you were 15. The self you are now is not the self you're going to be as you get older. In the next 5 years something about your life will change. Maybe you'll be working at a new job, driving a new car, hanging out with a different circle of friends, or living in a new house, whatever. Life is not supposed to be static.

Also what if the self somebody is is a horrible person? Adolf Hitler was certainly being himself when he ordered the killing of several million people and started one of the largest wars in history. Or a less extreme example, what if somebody is lazy and has poor hygiene? Or maybe they're just simply an obnoxious douchebag? What if somebody feels they just don't like the way their life is going at the moment? Maybe they feel they need to change to get the most out of life. Nope gotta keep on "being yourself" because that's what our corporate consumer media culture wants, or at least be the self that keeps on buying all their products and services.
