How are some powerlifters so strong at a lightweight?

I know of a guy who is the same height as me. However, his LBM weighs 10lbs less than mine!, yet he can bench bench press 45 pounds more than me! Are they intentionally trying to keep their lbm and weight down? What's the trick to benching that much with small arms?
    Barbell Bench press max: 255lbsX1
    Barbell Squat: 240lbsX6

I'm very weak on squatting compared to my bench press. I'm trying to change that. :( I want to build to my squats so badly! I'm currently cutting.

How did you determine that his lean body mass is less than yours? Or do you mean he weighs 10 lbs less total on the scale? No offense, but from the pics you have you don't have a lot of lbm going on.

In regards to your question, you can definitely get stronger without putting on *any* mass by improving technique/form and neural adaptations. As far as you lifting more at your current body weight, in addition to the above if you bulk a lot then cut back down to here again, I bet you will have added muscle and be leaner/stronger than you are now. Or take the long(er) road of eating around maintenance/a bit above and just getting stronger/recomp.

And if it's a random gym-bro bench press, he may not even be getting full ROM, let alone a competition pause at the bottom.
    Gym PRs:
    SQ: 360 x 1, BP: 165 x 1, DL: 330 x 2, OHP: 110 x 2

    Best meet lifts (raw w/wraps):
    SQ: 365, BP: 155, DL: 350, Elite total of 870 @165

Closest thing to a log, but better cause it's vids! = www.youtube.com/user/birdiefu

If there's a certain weight class they want to be in, then yes.

    Leverage/technique is very important.

THe leverage part is so huge. You can be same height but different proportions.
I keep pushing because I think I'm untouchable. But I'll learn the hard way because I'm only a popcorn fart away from a 30 day ban.
