yeah, not in all scenarios, but the average male doesn't look like they do. Social constructs have obviously changed since then, female figure is more ubiquitous & respected in modern times in comparison to male. But it's most likely due to the hypersexualised media.

Simple.
Genetics that tell their bodies to hold on to muscle when they eat very little food.
Same reason you see crackheads and ghetto mf'ers that are ripped. If I stopped eating I'd look like I belonged in a concentration camp. You are the only problem you will ever have and YOU are the only solution.

Your average Roman soldier was said to have been around 130-140 lbs
Your average Roman athlete would obviously have been much larger
Your average Roman citizen would be a walking sack of bones. Food was expensive and hard to come by.
They also trained calisthenics. Look at Frank Medrano and all the other calisthenic guys, you can get shredded to the bone if you train long enough.no homo

1. They were obsessed with aestethics in both arts and body.
2. Most of those sculptures were indeed made by looking at real muscular bodies otherwise they wouldnt make it so perfect and real looking, everything from insertions to veins and muscle shape is as real looking as it gets.
3. I read they had some cocktail mix of meat and water which they drank, similiar to todays whey protein, it was used by those in olympics.
4. Due to vanity, aestethic obsessions but also healthy spirit (something to do with philosophy) they exercised a lot. For example i just spent 5 hours playing WoW while some aestethic obsessed greek would probably use that time to build his body. He could probably crush me like a lil bich with his strenght and wrestling skills while all i know to do is playing fuking games liek some pasty pale nerd who desreves to be hanged i disgust myself srly
