What's with all the Adelaide hate? How many people have actually lived here?

If I was to settle down with a family anywhere in Australia, it would be Adelaide.

Plenty of festivals year round, nightlife isn't bad, housing is cheap, traffic is barely anything to complain about.

Surrounded by wineries and even further out are the Flinders Ranges / Yorke Peninsula.

Sure it can seem slow compared to the bigger cities, but for a population of 1.1mil... it does very well.

Also, this is coming from someone who spent a majority of his life on the Gold Coast.

The surveys look at cities with population of 500,000+ people.

Big American cities are not safe.

New York is quite safe, but I'd be willing to bet that "access to health care" is also a factor. Many rankings are rigged by our lack of a universal/socialized healthcare system, it's considered a disadvantage. Obviously, in reality, if you have a stable job, you probably have excellent access to the system.

Still, having been a number of places, a lot of international cities are actually much better maintained and more pleasant than some of the major American cities. As long as I could keep my income, would not hesitate to relocate if I had a good reason.

You sir are talking out of your ass. Its no big secret that any big city in the world is expensive. If you want a 700 square foot condo in Vancouver or Toronto you are looking at 300-400k. Which is actually on the low side if you compare it to big American or European cities.
