am I sick for laughing at this?
Daryell Dickson Meneses Xavier, described in local news as a jiu-jitsu instructor and a documented competitor for Gracie Barra in Brazil, is facing charges for abusing and killing his one year old stepson. If that weren't disturbing enough, there is also possible sexual abuse involved.
A report in Globo states that the boy was left alone with Xavier and, just one hour later, Xavier called the mother to inform her that the boy fell and was having seizures.
Globo has more (translated using Google Translate):
The child was hospitalized on September 27 in Anchieta Hospital, Wansbeck, and died two days later. Doctors had been informed that the victim had been dropped. Servers from the facility, however, triggered after police find that the injuries were not consistent with a fall.
"The action was blunt trauma to the force applied was very large. Only a person with great poise and knowledge of techniques, as the stepfather, who was jiu-jitsu, to know, "said the delegate from the 38th Precinct Tania Soares. "The child also had a fissure in the anus, it is unclear whether from sexual abuse, since constipation also gives fissure."
"Daryell was raped by about 20 prisoners. He had injuries all over the body, the most serious ones in the anal region. Insatisfied, and still furious about the crime committed by the professor, the prisoners tore apart the stitches that he received and raped him again. The blood stains on the rear of the short of the young man are proof of how much he suffered."

If he is 100% guilty, still sick for laughing? killing and raping a 1 year old, and then getting some pretty commensurate karma?
If his story is true, and the kid was DROPPED (oh and the anal fissures were from something like constipation), then yeah that would be horrific..."It won't get better, just different."

Hopefully I'll be training at Marcelo Garcia's for a couple months this summer, question - would you guys consider it douchey/showy if I bought an MG gi while I was there (I'll need an extra gi to help with the washing load) and wore it back home(Europe)?

keep in mind that external support (knee pads in your case) can strengthen muscular imbalances you have. your body will become reliant on them and begin to use different muscles when you're rolling. what can end up happening is these muscles stop getting worked and other muscles can be overworked, increasing your chance of injury.
i'd say only use knee braces if you absolutely need them. look for a way to fix the problem itself. it's exactly like when someone takes drugs for a medical condition, insomnia for example. the drug becomes a crutch and hampers (atrophies) the person's ability to sleep. so once this person tries to take the drug out of the picture, they find their insomnia has become worse.
this is my opinion, not a fact. you do what you think is right, i'm just offering a perspective on the issue
consider it a learning experience and get as much as you can out of it. pretend you're preparing for the next tournament
i'd tell you to relax but chances are even the greatest relaxation techniques go out the window once you step on the mat at your first tournament. competing at tournaments is a skill just like JJ, you'll get better and more confident the more you domisc bjj crew

My college has a BJJ club taught by a world class 3rd degree black belt. It's only $50 for the whole semester with classes 3x week. I box usually 4x week so i'll probably only do it 2x, but I really want to try BJJ. I'm just worried with my lower left back as I suffered a hip/lower back contusion on my left side in September and it still stings if I touch it hard. I likely have some sort of nerve damage.
