Just because they are home made wouldn't make them bad. It would just depend on the quality of the handles and plates and how they fit together. I have a home made set that I bought from a guy that is pretty nice and they are just CAP plates and handles.
As far as weight, most 55lb prostyle dumbbells will likely weigh around 57lbs. They have 55lbs of pankcake plates and then there is the weight of the handles.
The only real negative I see with those dumbbells is the endcaps. Those are just the small circles that will eat into your legs when kicking up heavy plates for benching. Mine had those and I replaced them with large Ivanko metal endcaps that distribute the weight better. I would hold out for a pair that already had the larger endcaps. I got my Ivanko end caps really cheap, but they are usually quite an expensive addition.Last edited by dumb.bell; 08-22-2013 at 06:54 AM.

I've seen the product demos on Youtube but I've never seen them in person. I don't remember the company name off hand. IIRC, the adjustable dumbbell plates lock on similar to the way that the Okie collars work.
Edit:
According to the website, the original retail price was $500 with free shipping. I looked on CL and the seller was asking $500 for his used set. LOL.

That appears to be an old Bodysmith (by Parabody) rack, which might be worth ~$200-$250 (possibly even less), $50-$75 for the bench (those NL benches are hard to get rid of in this area), $60 for the 120lb of weights, and about $30-$40 for the bar. The lat attachment and various handles add little (if any) value to the package.
So figure $350-$425 for the lot, and that's only if you're planning on keeping it because there's just no room for profit on these pieces at that price.
FWIW, $1200 would get you a brand new Body Solid GPR378, a decent bench, a new 300# oly set w/barbell, and you'd still have cash left over for a plate tree, some accessories, and a big tub of protein.Last edited by Stasher1; 08-23-2013 at 04:49 PM.

update on this, picking them up Sunday, guy accepted my 1150$ offer for them
pricing the 2 racks at probably 300$ .. that's 850$ for 2530lbs of dumbbells, so ~0.33$/lbs, I think I did good
checked for end caps, can probably buy enough for the whole set for around 200$ so that will probably be the first thing I do with them once I clean them up
