I'm going to get back to working out and I'm thinking about using whey protein (and casein). I've never used either before but I kind of know what I'm looking for. I'll be working out twice a day (morning and night if possible). Here's what I have so far after searching the forums and personal recs:
- ON 100% Whey GS seems popular.
- Gaspari MyoFusion is popular too.
- GNC Pro Performance AMP Amplified WheyBolic Extreme 60 is really good (personal rec), but is overpriced according to everyone here.
- GNC Pro Performance AMP Amplified WheyBolic Extreme 60 Platinum is better, still overpriced though.
- GNC Pro Performance AMP Amplified WheyBolic Extreme 60 Ripped works well, causes a lot of sweating, works for leaner people who want definition / muscle growth (not bodybuilder or anything; this is me). Also overpriced.
I think I'm leaning more towards GNC's Platinum or Ripped, but I'm also considering ON.
Another guy I was talking to (not a GNC rep!) said he uses whey 60 and it works, and when I brought up price he said the cheaper things don't work as well and will gain mass but in the wrong places (like my stomach). He did look like he knew what he was talking about though, but I also get that people have different experiences with stuff like this.
So any advice guys?

Personally, I'm a huge fan of ON Gold Standard for my protein.
Also remember that this is just a supplementary powder to your diet.
Taking this won't necessarily mean more mass if you're not eating enough to begin with.
However, it makes meeting your protein for the day much easier!••• Xtend Representative •••

Overall any protein will (or won't) work, it's all based on proper nutrition.
As far as which product, as suggested before, you're best off avoiding GNC anything, you're going to be paying too much for too little. You're just paying for hype.USMC (2009-2013)

Thanks for the input guys. So down to ON and MyoFusion I guess. And yeah I understand working out is like 80% diet, which I'll be getting a hold of (I can't easily change instantly, so it'll take a little bit to start eating healthier -- I have a fast metabolism so I'm not overweight yet). I already drink water only (with the exception of me breaking down and giving into soda / juices like once every 2 or 3 weeks).
With the proper workouts and nutrition, which would be more effective? Or more, would I see results faster / easier using these than just working out barebones (I work out without any of this protein stuff so I don't know what the results of using them are besides faster recovery?) The ON I looked at or MyoFusion (and I mean which variety of the brands would work best)?
I also understand taking these things should be like this:
- Eat a proper meal + ON like 30 minutes - 1.5 hours before a workout.
- Have a serving of ON after workout.
- Casein serving before bed.
- Mornings of days I don't workout have a serving of ON?
Thanks!
P.S. If it makes any difference I will mostly be focusing on upper body / cardio for the next couple of weeks or months. Legs are already disproportionately way stronger than my upper body so I won't be working them as much.

Okay wait. I eat a lot of meat and peanut butter (which probably doesn't really do much in the way of protein intake I guess). However I do have quite a considerable amount of starch in my diet currently (rice, pasta, bread). So will there actually be no benefit to me to take protein supplements?
I don't know how much protein I intake a day since I don't read nutrition labels usually (and we separate out meat from the original containers so I don't have it).
If I assume (which I can't) that I get enough daily, would protein supplements be a total waste for me then? Will I not gain anything from using them?

Alright. I'm on a 5-way fence now which I'll be looking more into but one last thing:
ON 100% Whey GS vs. MyoFusion vs. Dymatize ISO-100 vs. Cellucor Super Sport.
Are any of these better than the other (I realize there will be opinions and bias here)? Or can I not go wrong by going with any one four of these?

Well I understand that protein powder isn't necessary as it's basically food but not a substitute for real food (which I'm primarily focused on here, sorry if I gave the wrong impression). My only real goals are to reach my protein goals daily and eat more than my maintenance caloric intake (which apparently is 3.5k, which I'm pretty sure I eat more than).
So I may not really need it in the end, but the days I work AND workout I have the hardest time eating the usual amount of protein. I just need a little aid (I'm not using supplements to replace meals only to, well, supplement them on the days I may not specifically be reaching my macro).

I think what people are hinting at is more along the lines of this: It's great to have a schedule for when you take your protein (I do as well, and I am very strict to my routine) but it's not really the timing of your protein intake that will make or break your gains/goals. Being consistent with your OVERALL protein intake (along with everything else) is what is going to help you the most. Drinking a protein shake 10 minutes post workout and 100 minutes post workout still counts as your daily protein, which should be your overall goal, moreso then when you take your products.
I do drink a shake immediately leaving the gym, and before bed, and in my morning smoothie... but I undertand that If I drank two scoops at breakfast instead of one, and substituted that morning shake for my nighttime shake, my overall phsyqieu would not suffer

Thanks! And it says your inbox is full so I can't...
Yeah I get it. Timing doesn't really matter for me, I just put more of a structure and what I've seen to go by. I think I'd probably just end up taking it in the morning with breakfast and post-workout. I don't think I'll be doing a nighttime shake because I can meet my protein requirements I'm pretty sure and I don't think I should fork out money for casein since I'm only starting out.
Nevertheless, I'll be looking at the nutrition forums for a while! And everyone says that about Myo (I've never heard of it until today)!
That's what I thought but apparently not...
