is krill oil really worth it over strong omega 3?

Krill Oil omega 3's come in a phospholipid form as opposed to generic sourced fish oil omega 3's which are in a triglyceride form. Our cell membranes are made of phospholipids so it's assumed the krill oil source would naturally prove to be more effective/beneficial and they're studies to support this. I'd go krill sources over other sources

Both of these guys are spot on.
Just to expand a bit further on what Dodge said, since krill oil has a phospholipid structure (rather than triglyceride) it makes them much more absorbable and allows for a much easier entrance into the mitochondria and the cellular nucleus. This is a HUGE benefit. In addition to EPA and DHA, krill oil also contains a complex phospholipid profile including phosphatidylcholine, a potent source of reductive-stress-reducing choline, which also acts as a natural emulsifier. Along with all of this, you get Astaxanthin, which is a VERY potent antioxidant.
I urge you all to check out HALEO AquaRed. A lot of research has been conducted, and on top of that we have run 3rd party testing and have COA's on hand to prove the purity of our flagship product.http://www.haleo.com/

That is one of the things people who are in favor of krill generally point out.
Short study, but not overly promising for some of the purported benefits of astaxanthin:

Astaxanthin potentially gives more benefits to mice than humans
The antioxidant affects may actually be negligible as well for hard training athletes.
What do you mean by generic sourced fish oils? Most concentrated on the market are in EE form, not triglyceride. Phospholipids and triglycerides are transported across the cell membrane in the exact same way.
This is a lot of assumption...as there are studies to support both. Even for different purposes. But mainly, this doesnt touch on equivalency as krill tends to have vastly less EPA and DHA for the same price. Id go properly dosed fish over krill.Last edited by powercage; 03-17-2013 at 08:58 PM.

Alan Aragon actually recently touched on astaxanthin (that study in particular) in his research review. Interesting read.
I dont consider krill oil a suitable replacement for fish oil (at least not with the current research). It may have some benefits as an adjunct to fish oil intake however.Last edited by powercage; 03-17-2013 at 08:52 PM.

Cliffs: Preliminary research in support of astaxanthin is not overly optimistic (I believe he used something along the lines of a rocky start).
Further study needed
Luckily with Fish oil you can get all the benefits of a higher dose of EPA/DHA without the cost of krill. The increase in price doesnt equate to benefits imo.Last edited by powercage; 03-18-2013 at 07:45 PM.

Why not have the best of both worlds and not have to worry about taking one over the other?

The major advantages of Krill the way I see it are the phospholipid content. Phospholipids act as gate keepers to the cells in our body, so the EPA/DHA bound to phospholipids allow for increased absorption and utilization, this is one of the reason why Krill at lower dose has been shown to work similar to higher fish oil doses:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21042875
Not only does astaxanthin provide additional antioxidant support, but it can help prevent the oil from oxidize allow for better stability and shelf life compared to other omega 3 oils.
The thing many like about AQUA RED, or combination of Antarctic Krill and Pristine Cold Water Fish Oil product is that the soft gels are small and easy to swallow and there are no fishy burps. Results from our testers throughout this board and others are a Omega 3 product they can feel working for them.Joey Rodrigues
