i play mostly death, progressive and shred/neoclassical metal on guitar. played for 5 years, have awesome technique. id suggest to start with learning chords, scales, notes on guitar, and sight reading overall, basics are most important

Ok so lets really get down and dirty :
THE BASICS OF PLAYING GUITAR
Here we have a very bad mspaint picture of a guitar - with labels. These are some of the most improtant terms thrown about and as a beginner its best to know what the enck is, the bridge, the headstock etc is located.
Ok this is what the guitar page wiki says - its descriptive but not good enough without pictures. - I"LL EDIT IN PICTURES
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Guitar/The_Basics
Holding The Guitar
Sitting down: Sit up straight on a chair, with your feet on the ground. Place the waist of your guitar on the right leg, keeping the guitar completely vertical across its width. Rest your right upper arm on the side of the guitar so that it is comfortable. Your arm should bend with your thumb resting on the sixth string parallel to it. Your hand should cover the soundhole. On an electric, imagine a soundhole and keep your hand where the soundhole would be. Take your fingers of your left hand and rest it on the strings around the fifth fret. Place your right thumb behind the fingers directly behind the neck. Your shoulders should be relaxed. Now, lean forward slightly and relax. Most people without serious back ailments should feel comfortable and should be able to stay in this position without effort. If you are not, something is not right.
[edit] Using a Pick
Hold the pick inbetween your index finger and your thumb.
[edit] Using the Fretboard
Depress the guitar string firmly to the fretboard, close to the metal fret. If the string is not depressed enough, the string will strike the frets when vibrating and the note played will have a "buzzing" sound. If the string is depressed too hard, the pitch of the note will be higher than desired, so you'll have to practice to get the right amount of pressure.
Also for some chord positions its perfectly alright to let your thumb peak over the top as shown here with the C chord.

its brilliant if you're looking for chord theory

Hey guys.... great thread... dunno why i didn't see it earlier, I'm gonna make a post on beginners' theory sometime next week, based mainly on Bill Arnold's book... I'll start with chord construction and intervals, very helpful stuff to know if you're into learning music theory.

That would be very cool...I've been trying to read up on things but everything is so over my head right now .
Here is a cool little program I found to help memorize the notes all over the fretboard. They recommend doing it once and day and seeing the improvement over time. I'm sure most of you guys know these already but it's pretty cool.

I came across some awsome vids off Youtube - some kid in norway demonstrates his version to alot of songs that I think the music section will 'approve' of. this kids got his technique down. notice how he's not straining to paly at his speeds - so slowly progres with speed - make sure you can play it cleanly and easily. then worry abt speed. Good luck.

plus he uses guitar pro to learn his songs -
I HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU ALL DOWNLOAD THE DEMO - AND GOOGLE TABS IN GP FORMAT AND LEARN EM - EXCELLENT SOURCE FOR TIMING AND PRECISION LEARNING

This is the greatest thread in the history of git-tar. I've only been playing for a week (but longtime musician), and this thread is amazing.
"Do or do not. There is no 'try'."
Failure is never an option. It's just a temporary result of pushing your limits.

glad you guys like it -
Lesson 1 update
i know this sounds lame but its taking me a while to get a begginer lesson up like how to hold a pick and strumming - i'm looking for google vids and images of cyber fret to write a decent one.
lesson 2
a bit more advanced ... More keen on doing this today or tommorrow - but its gonna be a number of licks to have you going up and down the fret board. Lots of licks from necro****ist, megadeth, maiden. children of bodom, dream theatre, malmsteen and racer x (w/ paul gilbert). I'll throw in a couple of my own that helped me should be nicely put together soon.
will update you on this soon

Phrasing shaping and building your own riffs : Part 1 [written by trickae]
here is the harmonic minor position chart - the dots indicate where you'll be placing your fingeres and the bars going down the chart are the frets.
so for our practicing sake - say we play this in the scale of A harmonic minor.
here n = 5
but i want the misc-music section to play the scales in this progression
Code:-------------------------------------------0-1-4---4---1- ----------------------------------0-1-3---------------------3--1-0- ---------------------------1-2----------------------------------------2-1 --------------------0--2-3-------------------------------------------------3-2-0 -----------0--2-3------------------------------------------------------------------3-2-0 -0-1-4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------4--1-0
next:
Code:------------------------------------------------4-5-7 - and then backwards i'm too lazy to type it out ---------------------------------------5-6- ----------------------------4--5--7 ---------------------6--7 ------------5-7-8 -4-5-7-8
then play the harmonic pattern (pattern 1), then work your way up the next by playing the next consecutive patters son
harmonic at the 5th fret , locrian at the 7th, major at the 8th fret, dorian at the 10th fret, phrygian at the 12th, lydian at the 13th and finnally
the superlocrian at the 16th fret.Last edited by Trickae; 03-02-2007 at 09:09 PM.

so what next? All the cool shred heads in the misc tell me never to play in shapes and i should learn scales along a string.
- well lets do that then but lets take it one step further for the next part of the lesson.
[feel free to learn them along the strings as well - but i'm lazy and it'll broing tabing all that stuff out]
So ...
lets take a look at this riff:
Code:-------------------------------------------------------7-8---10--12-11--12 ----------------------------------------------9--10 -----------------------------------7-9-10 --------------------6-7-9-10- ---------3-5-7-8 -4-5-7
what else can we do?
note for later - add more self written licks

Wow, I cant belive I havent seen this post before, I started playing guitar when I was 13 (with lessons wich helps ALOT). I'm really happy to find bb people that share the same passion for music!
Here's some picks that might make some of you jalous! But was one of my most memorable day!
The dude with the long hair is me and i'll let you guess who the others are
I'm going to the G3 again on april 4th with Joe Satriani (of course), Paul Gilbert and John Petrucci. And got floor tickets this time, but no backstage pass lol
You can also see why I started working out, I was about 130lbs on these pics :s

Excellent addition - CHB - i've left out a number of symphony x tips - i'll get onto it once i get some research done this afternoon.
in the meantime - i appoligize for the slow updates and the heavy reliance on classical exercises - i'll bring back some clapton and add some john lee hooker/bb king for some blues tips.
And i'll post up some step by step examples on how to play some classic GNR solo's
irons up !

Here is a fun one where the guy recorded each guitar part and overdubbed himself. Many parts of this are very close to the real song:

If you hate shred, or don't like this song, don't waorry about tabbing it. I was just seeing if maybe you had any ideas where to even look for a tab? I understand many don't like this kind of music...but I hope you enjoy the vids, I love the stuff
