The wife and I have been talking about permanent birth control. She's talked to her doc about getting her tubes tied and some other permanent measures, but they frankly all sound pretty invasive with the chance of complications. I've been thinking seriously about getting a vasectomy. From what I understand, it's a relatively quick procedure with minimal recovery time. But I want to know what drawbacks there might be, and thought the knowledgeble folks on this forum might have some first-hand knowledge. Basically, does it have any affect on hormone levels? Does it affect anything of a sexual nature (besides making you sterile).
Also, is there any other male birth control methods out there?
Thanks!

I had it done after my last kid was born in 1988. I drove myself home and set in my chair with an ice pack. It never bothered me at all. Very little pain, and that was just went he snipped the left nut, well actually he had to grab some tube and give me a shot to numb it. That was the worst of it.
I have never looked back.
Didn't have to use condoms or any other sort of birth control with any of my wives LOL. Best thing I have ever done, in that realm of my life.

I'm a member of the girls club Did it in 92' after my 3rd child. My wife had full blown chicken pox at delivery (caught it from one of my kids) and they wouldn't tie her tubes because of possible complications. It's very expensive to have it done seperate of birthing, or at least it can be. So I stepped up.......reluctantly lol.
Someone mentioned you might be lucky and have a hot nurse? Well, my doc had two nurses in the room. One to assist and one to observe I guess. There I was, laying there on the table, fully awake, fully aware. The local anesthetic does prick (pardon the pun) in an uncomfortable way. Did I mention how cold the room was? I swear it, the room was freezing lol.
Yep, ice pack for the day and your good to go. And when it looks like it's turning black/purple and going to fall off......you were told about this right?.......don't worry, it just looks bad lol.
Lastly, the doc informed me that it was necessary to ejaculate many, many times after the procedure to be sure all live sperm is eliminated. I told my wife that the doctor instructed her to perform this therapy and to be very thorough."If a kid asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell him is "God is crying." And if he asks why God is crying, another cute thing to tell him is "Probably because of something you did."

I joined that crowd about 20 years ago. Worth every penny. But to expand on what dbx said.
Dr. told me it takes 15-20 times ejaculating to make sure all the sperm cells are cleaned out. Dr. wanted me back in 6 weeks for a check, so considering a week to heal up, I got more "lip hugs" from the wife in the next 4 weeks then in the last previous 5 years!
Flash forward a couple of years, a friend of mine had it done as well. Dr. gave him a choice. He could take multiple orgasms or go for what the Dr. called "The Big One". This is basically they filled him full of sterile 5% water, and I mean full. One orgasm and he is all cleaned out. Dr said to make sure towels were close by though, cause he was in for one great time so enjoy it. I asked my friend what it was like, and he said OMG!!! It was so powerful he wanted to go back and get the procedure done all over again. The Socialist Party candidate for President of the US, Norman Thomas, said this in a 1944 speech: "The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of "liberalism," they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened."

Oh I forgot something and not sure if some others experienced this or not but I did.
When I was without support (yes I think I had to wear a jock also) it would feel like my boys were just going to fall to the floor. Didn't hurt it just felt like that for a little while probably no more than a week.

Had mine disconnected in 2002 and never looked back. The doc said we could have sex next week, so I did a solo test drive the following monday. We did a tandem jump when M got home. I also had the NSV, but I had the open ended procedure as well, this allieviates any back pressure issues that may arise.

$10,000 is the lower end of the range for a vasovasectomy, that would be kinda like letting me try to reattach them and I'm pretty good with a needle and thread ! The doc that did mine charges $25,000 to put them back together!!
One thing I forgot to add, the first 48-72 hours are PARAMOUNT in your healing, DO NOTHING BUT GET UP TO TAKE A LEAK, THAT'S AN ORDER DAMN YER EYES!! I had a guy on one of my other forums swap a motor the next day and he was off his feet for 5 weeks in pain. Pay me now or pay me later, it's your choice. Ice and support will be constant comapnions for a few weeks as well, support all the time and ice for the first 48 hours, 20 mins on, 20 mins off and whenever you need it for as long as you need it. M was like a DI for the weekend, no getting up and she wated on me.Last edited by GREENFEATHER; 05-31-2006 at 03:19 PM.
