This is the msot over used comment/question when it comes to lifting to see the stronger person. Is it bad? Not really... For a athlete who runs a lot this shouldn't be something you go around asking all the time.
Now there is a good thing about this, if one has equal enthusiam in their other lifts which are more important like the Squat and the Deadlift, then this is just going to keep them motivated more. But if one is spending a bulk of their time developing triceps/chests/shoulders to bench more, and are injury free in lower body, then that is a waste of time.
However we cannot neglect the upper body either. We know the important of the core in running, and the arms do a lot for the drive of a sprint or a run, arms also are required to stabilize the core to allow to optimal stride length and lessen decceleration.
So yes, the bench press used by practically every world class sprinter and probably most if not all world class athletes who require some some sort of strength in their sport, unless they have their arms locked to chair and are using their legs for everything, is a good lift.
It's just we want to make sure that more time is being put into the squat and deadlift, so go ahead and bench as much as you want, just remember the squat and deadlift are more important.
The bench press also is a terrific lift if you have a lower body injury. You are still getting stronger somewhere and aren't being a couch potatoe.
Now going as far as saying how much strength is needed in the bench press, well for a sprinter who's a adult, 225 should be a requirement. Fasuba last I heard, did a 225x2 reps at his max, Ben Johnson could manage over 400 for his 1 rep max. Depends on style of body and genetics.
Do your bench press, just make sure the rack isn't left empty.

Last time I tested my max was 200 pounds.
However, right now I'm working on breaking my plateau. I have switched over from bench pressing to dumbbell bench presses, lateral raises, and dips. I'm progressing really well.
And again good post; I need to strengthen up more core more then anything. Do you think bicycle crunches could be done with a weighted plate?
