Looking for some good strong collars that I can use in a commercial gym that will be able to fit varying diameters to accommodate different bars. In the last month I've had a couple of close calls (just a slight tilt on squats made one side start to slide over 2 inches, commercial gym clamps are next to useless) which made me nervous enough to want to invest in my own quality collars to use.
Any good suggestions?
Thanks

Strong collars are compression collars that are used in powerlifting meets.
They only fit only type bars.
Clamps used in building things that look like large clothespins are what i use for most things.
They dont work that well for deadlifting but hold up for bench press and squats and can be used for different bar sizes.
I have the plastic pro lock collars and they dont work well on deadlifts or farmers walk.

I have had a set of lock jaw ones for a while. They are always in my gym bag.
They stand up to A LOT. I could not imagine needing any more plate gripping action than these provide. Screwing around in the gym with 2xbw deads and even after 20 reps these things did not budge!

COT 1.25

I love my ivanko compression collars. I have the COC 2.5kg collars with the spin lock. There are also cheap knock offs but they do not hold on the bar nearly as good and harder to loosen once tightened down. I know from experience. I have a cheap knock off of the COT 2.5 and they suck.My Training Journal: http://tinyurl.com/jasons-journal

I bought a pair of these COT 1.25 recently and I do not recommend them for use in a commercial gym unless they have good equipment there. They are strong as can be, but do not fit some cheaper or really beaten bars you find at a commercial gym. I simply can't use these at the gym near my work, but they are doing fine on the bars at my better equipped weekend gym. They are also pricy compared to other options.
A bud of mine uses the Rogue/Lock Jaw clamps and they are great too, cheaper, and fit crappy bars although the red version may be tighter and have the same issue as the Ivanko, I'm not sure really.

You guys actually like that lockjaw bull****? We have those at a gym I work at and they shoot off the bar left and right. Both the reds and the blacks, have to use multiple pairs or pair them with a cheap nail-and-screw collar to keep them on tight. Could just be their ****ty Troy VTX weight plates that knock around awkwardly but damn do I hate those collars almost as much as standard springs.

Just get the Ivanko COT 1.25. I have a pair of these along with the 2.5's, and prefer these smaller ones. They work nicely for creating smaller loads too, then you can so just 2.5lb jumps. They both hold about as well, but obviously the 1.25 is slightly smaller. They're not quite on the level of the massive 2.5KG collars, but whatever, those are designed for actual competition.

Lock Jaw Collars. I've had a pair for years, and they still hold just fine, even on DLs.

My gym just got a bunch of lock jaw esque collars, different brand but same design. They slide off the bar on deadlifts for me, esp around 405 for reps. The old ones work much better which are like these:

So it sounds like the consensus then is lockjaw from nearly every person here, except the one bad experience. Maybe it was a chinese knockoff? I think I saw them on elitefts.com or somewhere along those lines. Are theirs okay?

Agreed ! The Lock Jaws are great! My gym actually has them. If I ever leave this gym I'm currently training at I'm going to buy a pair to keep in my gym bag, and use wherever I go. they have been used and abused and always held up great. Can't go wrong with Lock Jaws.

I bought the ivanko 1.25 collars a few years back. They're great, but the collars can only go as far as the bars you put them on.
As stated earlier in the thread, gym bars are usually poor in spec. The collars wouldn't even fit on some of the sleeves at the commercial gym I went to because ivanko has very strict tolerances.
I doubt you'd want to get the 2.5kg spin locks. They're pretty heavy to be lugging around...

Please note the ivanko suggestion was not to the OP but to Rags85 looking for a collar weighing 1.25lbs.

If you go with the lock jaws I would go with the newest model as they fixed several flaws both structurally and gripping performance.
