I do agree that Phil isn't the most impressive comparatively speaking to other bodybuilders but that doesn't really matter, hell, even Kai isn't really impressive in the off season when clothed.

Either Phil is very deceiving in a t-shirt or a he might take a break from supps and training after the O.

Yates, Coleman, kai, Nasser, Ruhl all looked huge in regular clothes and in the off season.

On another note, I thought that it was an interview which really puts him (and the sport) into positive light. He made himself look like a smart, down to earth friendly guy on TV. That's always a good thing.

You also forget this could be his "time off" as well. A lot of guys will take a month or two off of everything. Holidays is often that time.

Actually he looks aite there, but yeah there are def some guest posings and in general he does tend to be very unimpressive (relative to some of the other bbers) in the offseason.

Regular gym rat may be a step too far, but i've never been impressed with phil in the off-season either (compared to most of the other pros).

^^this... yes and I am a fan of his and repsect the man very much and of course have met him in real life but I have never recalled seeing him looking this small..granted he does grow into shows and takes a break from his "supps" obviously but I was blown away by how much he actually shrinks down to...anyway it obviously works well for him (3x Mr.O)

It isn't really. Back in the day( early 90's) guys did this endless bulk then cut( +50) and repeat. Now many of them stay close to( +/-20) to contest shape so that they don't have to kill themselves for a show. I just found "regular gym rat amusing" and i guess it really depends on the quality of folks at your gym.

Cus there's only really 1-2 shows a year that matters to top guys. And the top guys skip the AC focusing on the Olympia to show judges they are giving 100% to one show. Then you have the biggest offseason possible

They are probably focusing on longevity/health (reletively) . Phil is quite secure in the eyes of the judges, so all he has to do is follow the formula that gave him 3 titles. Its on the other contenders responsibility to bring something new and take risks.
