I use the momentum to bring the DBs back to my knees. And, that's with HEAVY dumbbells. There's times when it becomes necessary to drop them, but otherwise training yourself to utilize a controlled deload isn't a bad thing.
Bodybuilding is 60% training and 50% diet. Yes that adds up to 110%, because that's what you should be giving it. Change the inside, and the physique will follow.

I think there is "some" difference between dropping them and deliberately slamming them down hard on the ground for attention. I take a few precautions like putting 2 rubber mats by the sides when pressing the 110's then dropping them. It's a compromise.

I drop those ****ing weights on DB rows. When I was in a bit better shape and rowing 120 x 10 (rubber DB's and padded floors) that **** was dropping.

And I personally DGAF what people think of me for doing it. I think too much time is spent focusing outwardly toward people who have no impact on your lifting ... see this a lot when it comes to dropping weights, whether or not someone's workout outfit matches, whether or not they grunt, etc.

Unless the guy is throwing them near where I am lifting, curling in the squat rack, etc. etc. it's of no consequence to me. Just my 0.02.

Those rubber DBs are merely rubber coated, they are not "bumper DBs".

They break just as easily as the others.

I love the mindset of lots of poeple at the gym. Seems to be a cross between "It's a gym, supposed to be bad asses here!!" and "It's not my sh*t, why do I care about taking care of it?!?". In reality, it is your sh*t, since it is the gym you use.

There was a guy at a gym I used to go to and he would
DL on tbe squat rack, he'd use like step aerobic steps to make him the right height, lift and then literally drop down on the rack and the whole gym would hear it rattle and bang, he'd then look around to see if anyone could see how much of a man he was! I just thought he was a bit of an idiot.
I really don't see why he done it on the rack other than to make as much noise as possible

Yep, I always drop weights (slam them or hurl them in a random direction when I remember to), and of course, leave plates on bars, dumbbells all over the floor, and just make as much mess as I can for others to clean up, because I'm childish and sh!theaded that way.

He was doing rack pulls because his gym removed the power cage w/ adjustable safeties, to make room for a silly machine that simulates squats. He's probably about 5'9" and needed the aerobic step to get the BB at knee level for the pulls.

No -- it wasn't me. But it's exactly the same story. Except I don't drop it and look around.

Deadlifts - yes, to a degree, as long as management allows it.

Everything else - no. It is very easy to return to the starting position without hurting yourself.

Dropping weights and grunting are not in the same ballpark as someone's outfit matching. They do effect other people's workouts, it is distracting and annoying, not to mention, you are taking a chance of wearing out equipment that I pay to use.

99% of gyms have rules which always include no dropping weights and no excessive noise., why do you think that is? Everyone understands the occasional drop or grunt, but if you do them every workout you need to take a close look at what you can actually lift and what you are trying to lift. Leave your ego at the door.

Only on my heaviest set of deadlifts. And I would still keep the bar in my hands and at least try a little bit to slow it down.

WTF is wrong with you pussies?!!??!?!!?

Of course you're supposed to slam your weights down on the floor, or bench or even on that skinny guy at your gym who always smells bad. How else can you let everyone know you're a badass???

Geez Louise, this is bodybuilding, not tiddleywinks; get in there and create some chaos! Forget all about all that "Gym Etiquette" crap! Throw some **** around! Make a nuisance of yourself!

There's a kid in my gym that throws his 40's down after a db bench like he's ready to fight somebody. Looks kind of stupid if you ask me. If that's heavy to him, fine, but I'm surprised somebody hasn't said something to him yet. Now if I'm flat pressing 90 or 95lb db's, yeah, I'm gonna drop them when I'm done, but not slam them. I guess it all depends on the atmosphere of your gym.

There's no need to compromise your shoulder, OP. Just drop them if that's what you want to do.

I usually put the dumbell vertically to the ground, so it won't roll nor go to someone on the next bench, just making sure to hold the dumbell when it's on the ground so it won't bounce at all and nobody gets injured nor disturbed.

When it comes to Dc-bench, it's a little different story, because it will put a lot of pressure on the shoulder if I don't drop it. If nobody is around it, I drop it but I throw it forward so it doesn't roll other ways and safely stays under the dumbell rack. This might require practice because sometimes dumbell doesn't land right and will bounce and go another way (esp if dumbell is rubber one).

and I would never drop any dumbell if pretty lady is near by.

I do the Rippetoe method in the video from the post in this thread.
In my younger days i even did this with 150lb DB's.
This technique isn't real easy to learn but once you do it is a nice easy way to handle DB's on flat and incline presses.

I love the mindset of lots of poeple at the gym. Seems to be a cross between "It's a gym, supposed to be bad asses here!!" and "It's not my sh*t, why do I care about taking care of it?!?". In reality, it is your sh*t, since it is the gym you use.
lol obviously they are not made of rubber...and if I broke it... I'd be responsible for paying for it, too.

It isn't like I'm tossing them across the room. It's a DB bent over row... they're dropping from my hand to the floor when I'm bent over with my knee on a bench. It's like a foot (maybe 18 inches...?).
