Hi,
It's my first ever post in this section. I've been doing starting strength for 1 and half months. So, how long to train before first powerlifting meet?

How much should you typically be able to lift before thinking about competiting?

Decided i wanted to try powerlifting in january (casual gym goer for a couple years.. not a ton of time actually in the gym).. Entered the first meet i found that was pretty local march 31st.. so a little over 2 months
already said but, as long as you can lift the bar(or barely lift who cares), your in!First meet: (3/31/12) ...... Last Meet(6/13)
300/275/460 1035@238 ...... 375/310/520 1205@242.5

How does powerlifting meets work? You enter a weight class and you do your b/s/d and you combine it and see who has the most?

Can you squat the bar? Can you bench the bar? Can you deadlift the bar?

I am going to compete the first time this summer after a year of training. But, as Simp3204 said, if you can lift the bar you can compete, and the more experience you get the better. I only waited a year because I didn't have time to compete.

I will have trained 7 months, in April, for my first meet. Took 13 years off before that. =)

Six years ago I trained for 7 months or so and made some pretty huge gains. Didn't do strength training since then (stayed active, though) but I started lifting again in late-December 2012 and my first meet is in mid-March.
So... it'll be three months. I'll be THRILLED if I total over 1k at 202 lbs.In 2006 I was a Starting Strength success story, gaining 30 pounds of muscle and hitting 400/300/500 over seven months. Then excuses happened and my interests shifted. I made a pathetically short-lived attempt at a comeback eight months later, but that didn't last. That was nearly six years ago. I'm now 27 and am back for another shot at things. Follow my log and watch me (hopefully) get hella strong again!

I started lifting in junior high, had two periods of weight training as my last two classes of the day in high school, lifted off and on as an adult, and my first meet will be next month.
I've been a big fan for decades though, it's just that between getting married at 18, working, going to school, raising my kids, I haven't had much time or money to really get into it.Eat, Sleep, Lift...Repeat!
