    Regular v. Decline Bench Difficulty

Is decline bench supposed to be easier that regular bench? I have found that my max for decline is now 20 lb higher than my max for regular. Is this just a coincidence or have other people found this too?

    Just curious. Thanks

my thought is that decline puts you in a stronger position, especially if your flat bench form is not perfect. I think it is pretty common to be stronger on decline bench than flat bench, just as you are weaker on incline bench than flat bench.

I don't think that's all that unusual. The ROM is shorter on a Decline bench, and you're in a biomechanically stronger position to push from that angle.

Absolutely. I see guys all the time that struggle repping 225, then load up 315 on decline bench to knock out some forced reps :P

^ This, ROM is shorter plus I personally find I can put more tricep in to this which helps me bump up the weight.

With regular bench, you have to go out of your way to to let the rear shoulder area assist in stabilizing. I feel that's why a lot of people say that Bench strength improves when you squeeze your shoulders back. There is a shorter rom on decline, but you also start to lose the capacitating power that the pecs provide on flat. In a sense, that power seems to allow the pecs to pull the arms in stronger from flat position.

Decline bench has a smaller range of motion, which in turn decreases the distance from the point of rotation and the force (Weight). This means a smaller amount of torque and hence force is required to move the weight.
