The bent trap bar in post #1 is something I haven't seen before.
But I also agree with you OP in that it probably occurred in the shipping process,
Hard to imagine a bend to the bar like that occurring while being used properly.

It's probably more of a human fail than an equipment fail but I wanted to share it. There's some black paint scuffs on the side of the bar that was bent which makes me think that something big (and painted black) ran over it or fell on it.

I had these chrome spin-lock adjustible dumbbells since I was a teen. They are still awesome and I use them all the time. However, the chroming starts to come off at this location. Now I usually use painted plates to sandwich the chrome plates in, but sometimes I bring the weight down , and they can be dangerous when spinning the lock. The chrome plating produces sharp jagged edges.

I still use them, but i just have to be cautious lol

Ouch! I wonder if some of the loose chrome would come off with a wire brush or wire wheel... that might help a little.

I've got a cheap trap bar that's bent to crap too, not as bad as the one in the pictures but noticeably bent. Just from normal use, I think the most we ever loaded on it was about 500 so not even a lot of weight. Garbage.

Here's a broken Cap hex dumbbell that's being sold on eBay. It's sort of scary how it's fit together. The ends of the handle aren't even fish tailed.

    Sweet pre-made hex blobs!
You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

Both of my generic bars had this happen. At the time I didn't have money for my Pendlay bar, so I used JB Weld and put them back together. That was 2 years ago. I abused them both beyond belief, but to this day the collars have never come off.

FINALLY!!! 50 post. Now I can respond to posts freely. I hope. *fingers crossed*

That looks like a York bar. Have they gotten that bad, or is that a knock off? Even my generic Cap bars have survived all these years intact.

I use a 70s York every day and it's straight as an arrow. I'm not a crossfitter though. I looked through the comments and didn't see any details about the bar that she was using. It does appear to be a split sleeve. I wonder if it's a women's bar.

Here's a more recent photo of the same lady. It looks like she's switched to a fat bar.

Now I usually use painted plates to sandwich the chrome plates in, but sometimes I bring the weight down , and they can be dangerous when spinning the lock. The chrome plating produces sharp jagged edges.

I still use them, but i just have to be cautious lol
You can get some rubber o-rings from the hardware store. They are usually in the aisle with plumbing/piping I believe. Just put that on the last plate before you screw it on. You can get a tighter rubber o - ring and put that on the bar (right before you put the first plate on). I used the #18 rubber o-rings. They can also be stretched to fit the olympic collars for a tighter fit. Works for me, and all the chrome is in-tact.

But if that doesn't work, you can sand it down I guess.

    Classic.
You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?
