yes of course you can as long as you have protein from a variety of foods.
although I would like to bring to your attention that whey protein has the best amino-acid profile vs. any whole food and is the most inexpensive in terms of cost per servingHe who is without gains, shall bench the first plate.

protein power is used for ease of use.
just because u take it isnt going to make you stronger then others that dontPsalm 23:4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no Norwood Reaper, for You are with me; Your Shaver and Your Razor, they comfort me

Of course is is possible.
Many people use it because it is just convenient & if you buy unflavoured, no additives stuff then it has basically no cals except protein.
Without it you'll just have to eat more steak, chicken, eggs etc & have less cals left over for other things.Misc Aussie Crew

of course, that's why it's called a supplement and not a requirement. I dropped the shakes due to cost and substituted 4 eggs in the morning in it's place. If anything, my strength gains went up. Get your protons from food whenever you can.
There is simply no other exercise, and certainly no machine, that produces the level of central nervous system activity, improved balance and coordination, skeletal loading and bone density, muscular stimulation and growth, connective tissue stress and strength, psychological demand and toughness, and overall systemic conditioning as the correctly performed full squat.
